OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

As the cat is coming out of the bag. I should probably enter the same disclaimer at this point - I have accepted a position as a director (and minority shareholder) in a to be launched ISP )this unfortunately makes proceeding with the MWEB issue is a little more complicated).

South Africa needs a robust ICT industry with multiple players interacting and competing within the context of the highest ethical standards of a business. ISPs are revenue orientated enterprises that have a constant risk of failure and can reap in massive rewards. The role that certain ISPs have played in transforming the industry has been commendable and the profits made from playing that role are well deserved. However as a dynamic industry a need has arisen for a new player and a decision has been taken to take up the challenge.

There are certain ISPs that continue to bring innovation to the market, that assume considerable risk in betting for the consumer (and in this vain Afrihost as a competitor ISP is a good example) and others who manage to drive an ever expanding base of users (Telkom Internet) who are adopting broadband as part of their life.

Unfortunately there is also a tendency and ample historic practice of businesses adopting unsustainable and dishonest (particularly on the marketing side of things) practices or making promises to consumers to induce contracts which they later wilfully breach. Too many businesses have blamed consumers for the failure of the businesses business model. Before accepting a position in an ISP I placed a lot of energy into fighting off what is tantamount to fraud, now I hope to put my energies into building a company that forms part of a wonderful ICT ecosystem. I am sure DJ feels the same way but we expect to be held to the highest standards and endeavour to hold ourselves (as we hold our business partners) to those standards. I will continue to push for LLU (and now have a little more muscle in the process) and there is agreement that our business will make the case for that which grows the industry even if it would force us to change our business models.

One of the great things about the Internet is that is is founded on a spirit of competition with cooperation.

I'd like to avoid poaching this thread for our own benefit as that's rude, and it's not the way to do business, but I concur wholeheartedly with Paul's position, and it is the reason that together with our other shareholders we make a fantastic team with some truly unique visions of how to evolve this market in the right directions. After many years of seeing how not to do this, we feel we've built a model that will please even the most discerning mybroadband members, and we expect to be held to the same standards as any other ISP on the market. We know what we're getting in to here, and rather than be reactionary, we've chosen to be pro-active in ensuring that our customers experience the internet the way it was meant to be...

I'm personally all for quoting that private message, but last time I checked that was a bannable offense here? Which is probably a large reason why the shadier attitudes get passed around in that medium.

Absolutely. We already have dozens of paying customers behind the scenes who will attest to the quality of the products, the pricing, and the service levels...;)

perhaps... start a thread at this point to leave OW to its devices ?

Thank you Paul and DJ for giving us something to look forward to!

As long as honsesty and transparency are there, we are looking forward to it. These excuses that OW has displayed shows that they think that their consumer base is a bunch of dumb sheeple!

All businesses need to make money, as long as it is honestly, you have my vote. In the sense that KALSTER was implying, with limited knowledge, that he could not see the analogue of a Water-meter being shared between two homesteads and each has to pay the metered amount, compared to shared accounts... Some education might be required amongst the technogical dwarfs.

I wish you guys all the best and may you go from strength to strength!!

I for one will follow this new ISP with great interest!

I, like many, are tired of being given the run around by stonewalled ISPs. I am sad to see OW go this way, as I have always enjoyed the rapport Keoma had with his client base. Unfortunately, these pretty strong allegations of account sharing and a most definite drop in speeds has me looking to jump ship. A pity, I really enjoyed the prices and gaming prioritisation.

DJ, if you are able to, would you kindly drop me a PM with any details on packages you might have coming up? All info treated as confidential of course. I understand if you would rather wait for launch.

You said you didn't want to hijack the thread :P

Just decided to let a torrent run during supper.
Wow such speed, much download. NOT.
2KB/s, on a Sunday evening. This is not the OW service I am used to or was promised. Unshaped after hours. What happened to that? Of course, Keoma won't see this as he no longer cares.
This is going to turn in to a worse PR disaster than MWEB >.<

My Everyday account runs at full speed when downloading a healthy torrent now. Might be the torrent or your setup. Try using another ISP account.

Same thing's happening here. I'm cool with it now though, since I've given my cancellation notice. :)

I didn't really care about P2P anyway, but when it's shaped like this, streaming is bad too (I think it uses the same protocol). This is why they lost me. I waited patiently on the sidelines for 3 weeks hoping things would change, but they didn't. Yesterday things were working so well, I almost regret that I had cancelled, but now I'm glad I did.

You are not using 'em healthy torrents :erm:
