Good day all

Need some ISP advice please, i am currently on Mweb standard 2mb uncapped, which is advertised as uncapped but sadly they throttle you at 70GB and the only way to really lift is to pay extra for the business uncapped package

So for downloading it is useless and what i use to do over past few months and so is to get WA capped account which was nice with the Download plus promotion giving you 50GB - 1TB bandwidth from 12:00 - 6:00am.

But that deal has since expired...and i am looking towards this new deal from Opeweb, full speeds from 12:00 - 7:00am

The mweb account is currently on my dads name and he doesn't want to upgrade since for his purposes it is fine, which i understand.

Hence why i am seeking an alternative for my downloading requirements.

I just need an account where i can do about 100 -150GB of downloading a month without being shaped & throttled to a crawl.

Anyone that is currently using this 2mb Openweb Uncapped account @ R150 that can comment on the speeds and usage threshold limits?

Sorry if this is a double post...

Thanks in advance.

Peace

You'd be much better off going for a Webafrica Home Capped account.

For R149 you can get 40GB anytime data + 80GB data to use between 00:00 and 6:00
For R199 you can get 60GB anytime data + 120GB data to use between 00:00 and 6:00

On a 2Mb line you should almost always get full speed as long as you have bandwidth available.

Rather use a Telkom account and use the nightsurfer data.

EDIT: Basically your choice is between Telkom and WebAfrica, don't use Openweb.

300 - 350 GB per month on a 2Mb OpenWeb Uncapped Gold account. (Not sure but it's either an Orange or Leon account or something...it was a special not the legit gold account)
Paying R250 per month so it really works out to less than R1/Gig.

If any other ISP can beat that, I'd like to hear about it.

I can download whatever I want, there is no throtteling whatsoever.... only thing is you will get shaped on NNTP/P2P during the day - but during that time you can youtube/browse/http download/steam download/game/etc with no problems.

160GBs pm on the 2Mb Incredible Uncapped Promo for R99 :p

The point is bragging about offerings that are no longer available is about as useful to the OP as tits on a bull. :D

Ah, I didn't know they discontinued the orange and leon packages.

Sorry OP, I don't know anything about the new packages they have now... good luck!

Yeah I would suggest Telkom softcap account. Uncapped between 00:00 and 7am Monday to Sunday.

Here is my usage for the month so far and its still working like a dream this account.

Line Speed? That would have to be done on a line which is faster than 4Mb.

My line is syncing @ 13.3Mbps. Its the Do Elite bundle. :) Was not trying to show off my usage but just to note that Telkom night surfer is completely uncapped between 00:00 and 7am Monday to Sunday and I would say pretty damn close to unshaped too because you can do some serious amount of downloads.

It might be something to look into if you are looking for a capped account with uncapped "late" ;) data. You also get a do bundle discount if you have the line and data with them but not a must.

I take it you have 20mb VDSL,

1) What's the speeds like between 00:00 - 07:00
2) How is the shaping? (Specifically Usenet?)

I'm interested in getting 20mb VDSL if the speeds are good during off-peak times.

Why only 450GB/month though? I calculate that with even 10mb, you can download around 900GB a month during the 00:00 - 07:00 periods.
Just saying.... I do 350GB and that's only on a 2MB line?

Advice: Stay the hell away from Openweb!

You are welcome.

Why not just upgrade to MWEB PREMIUM? You can do 200GBs before being throttled. and way, way cheaper than business.

No I'm on the 20Mbps ADSL2+ profile but I'm 2.4KM from the exchange so line only syncs @ 13.3Mbps which is good enough now that the 20Mbps option is cheaper than then 10Mbps option.

Speed wise Telkom softcap got plenty of that. It feels like its pretty much unshaped yet it is a shaped service. Usenet which I use for my download is full speed all the way. I use saix and 2 free usenet servers with a nextgennews block account just to grab any missing parts. Works great.

Okay, sorry for hijacking the thread, but this has got me interested now.
Apparently I don't have VDSL in my area yet, but I could probably get 10mbit in the meantime.... now the question is, will it be better than my 2mbit openweb?

Yes, I know that sounds silly, but remember my OpenWeb account works very well. I do 300-350GB/month.

Does anyone have a 10mbit ADSL Telkom Capped account and is using the free night surfer data like cavedog is doing? Does Telkom throttle you?
How much data do you guys push through each month using this tactic (automating downloads between 00:00 and 07:00?)

Okay cool but why are you projected to only do around 450GB/month?

I mean, it's 100GB more than I do each month, sure... but you have 6X the speed.... shouldn't you be doing >1TB/pm ?

Why is volume downloaded so important to you? I stream what I want when I want. With a few downloads for others/internet problem days.

I'm curious why people store everything that they will probably never all use/watch.

- Because I'm using a custom built system that allows you to switch channels like Cable TV, that is built from local content. I have 200+ channels to choose from and can switch channels instantly with no buffering.
You can't have that when you want to try stream everything, you can only start up one stream at a time and takes time to buffer.

- Because I might have multiple video content running at the same time on different devices, TV... PC... iPad
You can't have that when you want to try stream everything, 3 simultaneously HD streams will not work.

- Because I have a 51" Plasma with Surround sound... so I would like my stuff in 1080p AND 5.1 DDS.
You can't have that when you want to try stream everything, even Netflix doesn't have FullHD and 5.1 channels on all their titles, only a selection of them.

- Because I watch movies during the day, or at night with my girlfriend, not 12 o' clock in the middle of the night.
You can't have that when you want to try stream everything, because telkom only gives you 50GB to use between 7:00AM to 12:00PM... Bluray Quality can require ~10GB per movie, so that's only 5 movies per month. ugh..

- Because I watch new movies and series.
You can't have that when you want to try stream everything, because Netflix is for people who watch old content.

- Because I watch old movies and series.
You can't have that when you want to try stream everything, because Netflix doesn't have everything....you can only watch what they have made available.

- Because I use Sickbeard and Coutch Potato, that allows me to add something once and it will download an hour or two after it airs. It appears in my Plex automatically.
You can't have that when you want to try stream everything, because you need to remember what airs when or when a new movie gets released.

- Because If the internet gets interrupted, I can still watch everything all day every day.
You can't have that when you want to try stream everything, slight congestion or some shaping/throttling and you're watching a buffer icon spin.

And Finally, Because I spent about R5000 on games during the steam summer sale, and have plenty of games that need downloading... some are 20GB in filesize.

TL,DR: I want to be able to run 1080p 5.1 content, on 3 devices at the same time (if I need to), at any time of the day or night, without using any of my 50GB data allowance, that I added 5 months ago on my IMDB watchlist, that got released today, that gets presented to me on a silver platter on my Plex.

Streaming can't do that.... Even If we actually managed to play three 1080p bluray quality streams at once on multiple devices, we can all watch a total of 2 or maybe 3 movies each and the monthly cap will be *poof* gone in a single saturday.
And that's with movies roughly the size of about 5GB..... I'm not even thinking what happens when I want to watch a new 3D movie one night?

My 3D movies are up to 20GB each, easily. So with streaming that will give me roughly 3 movies for the month and my cap is gone. Wow R760 a month for 3 movies... streaming sounds awesome!
No thanks, pre-download is the way to go for me.

Hopefully that thoroughly answers your question. :p

Because I just don't download everyday. I just download what I want so I could have downloaded way more if I wanted too.

It more than thoroughly answer my question. :D

Here is my summary, summarized:

- SD everything from put.io to my one device at a time.

Thanks for taking the time to explain it properly. Different needs for different people...
