OpenWeb Gold Shaping Policy

Way to dodge the issue at hand, that is a promotion of Gold. Don't run a promotion of a different product then and dupe everyone into thinking otherwise.

No-one is 'dodging' anything. The concern at hand has been addressed, and explained. So sorry you feel it has been 'dodged'.

You are addressing the future not the past - hence dodging - nuf said.

Gold is one of South Africa's fastest and most reliable premium products
Therein lies the issue imo. In the minds of many MyBB, OW Gold is a single product with a solid reputation. Now it has become "products" - thus creating doubt in people's mind whether the one they got is comparable to the one that has the solid reputation.

Personally I think both versions of Gold will be excellent from a technical point of view. I also get what Mr Beep is saying about price point - it makes sense. Yes higher contention, but also much cheaper. Fair enough. However, I fear OW is treading on really dangerous ground here from a image & PR point of view though. Its effectively brand dilution. This generally ends in tears.

That being said, I also feel I need to level the playing field a bit here by pointing out that OP has provided +- zero actual data of any kind. I'm also a bit wary of the progression of this thread (How does shaping work -> Poor speeds -> False marketing). The MyBB community has, collectively, a vast amount of knowledge with respect to ADSL. Hell we've got people here who have insight into future strategic plans by Telkom. So you're really better off just dumping facts & letting the community make a call rather than just laying into the OW CEO.

Precisely my fear. I heard such good things about Gold, that now that I hear thats not what is on promotion, i wonder where it fits in.. ie what are you actually getting. How much less than Gold and in what way. All very muddling

Well I'm on an OW package ranked way lower (Gamers special) than any of the Gold packages and I have no complaints whatsoever. So personally I'd take this lower priced Gold & call it a day even if it mentions higher contention. Remember the "value" of the Gold packages lies primarily in multiple backbone backups not the contention ratios, though obviously thats good too.

My concerns are more business orientated - OW is in a good position right now and I'd like to see them stay there. If I feel a strategic move is wrong I'll voice my concerns. Maybe they are heard, maybe they aren't. Alea iacta est.

This is the reason why I left. They always fiddling with the accounts.
Not a big fan of that either, but OW has not failed me yet performance wise so I accept it for what it is.

My issue that I have with Gold is that when I was with them (full price R738 or whatever) it worked 100% until the day it didn't when the account went dead due to no faul of my own, I would get a new account username and/or a port reset and after the 4th time got tired and left. Openweb is the only IS ISP that this happened with. I'm sure they are recycling accounts or something. Been with Plugg IS since Nov 2012 and haven't had a days issue - my account even has my own name in it.

As per my earlier post, kindly email [email protected] for a trial account and make up your own mind.

Coming up with various editions of Gold to cater to more peoples specific needs/budget is fine, as long as they are distinguishably named. In fairness, you are doing this better these days (i.e. Orange etc). A comparison table with contention rates and explanation of what these tweaks are would alleviate confusion.

But when, as happened in January, you have something called "Gold Uncapped Promotion" at a time when you have only one product on your site called "Gold Uncapped" - of course people are going to think they are getting that product at a discounted price.

Wait, we aren't really on the Gold Package?

I also signed up in January and there was only "Gold Uncapped" - not "Original" Gold, "Orange" Gold, or "Leon" Gold
Nowhere did it state I was getting anything less.

No, we are not on the package we thought we were on. Given that we are paying the same price as the Leon Gold (what they describe as their entry level Gold package), I would assume we were put on that package before it was thusly named. Or something of similar standard.

I am more than a little disappointed that despite 3 customers all stating that they were missold the same promotion, OW representatives cannot bring themselves to even acknowledge or apologise for this, much less show any willing to rectify the situation.

Yea, false advertising, in other words, FRAUD!

Mr BEEP, man up and correct your mistakes!

There is nothing to apologise for.

We did not advertise the package as the Gold Original, ever.

You are receiving a similar experience to the Original package, barring a few tweaks. I also note that the reason why you (JohnRambo) posted this thread in the first place is due to your wife experiencing slow speeds via a torrent. It is also important to note that today you too are experiencing slow speeds. The network is completely unshaped and has been since Friday. If you experience slow speeds today on torrents it is not due to shaping, and might be due to one of a hundred different reasons, leading me to believe that your problem is completely unrelated to the OpenWeb account.

You are making out as if we sold you a Standard Uncapped product for the cost of a Gold product. This is false. You are on a Gold service level, with Gold priority.

We will continue to sell Gold uncapped variations, as we feel we need to offer our Gold service to as many clients as possible, at an affordable rate.

We see this matter as closed. Any further discussions regarding OpenWeb matters can be made via our official OpenWeb uncapped thread. OpenWeb will not be monitoring this thread any further, as we have made our position on the matter clear.

Lastly, please refrain from making such accusations on a public forum. If you have an issue with OpenWeb, I invite you to email myself [email protected] and include details of your issue. If you are no longer an OpenWeb client, I do believe your comments are of no relevance.

MrBeep,

You did not have a product called Gold Original..

In January, you had only Gold Uncapped. And the advert you ran was Gold Uncapped Promotion.

If you could not see that people would tie the campaign to the product at the time, you should certainly see it now that three people who took the offer are telling you that is what they thought they had bought.

The torrent issue was another post entirely. If you actually bothered listening to your clients, you will find I started posting here some days earlier about general slowness compared to when I first subscribed (see page 1).

You on this board and Leon on email support continue to insist that Gold Uncapped Promotion did not relate to the only Gold Uncapped product you had on offer because it did not say "Original Gold" - I will say this one more time and you already know this because it is YOUR company - YOU DO NOT HAVE A PRODUCT CALLED "ORIGINAL GOLD" At the time of the promotion, you did not even have Gold Leon or Gold Orange. Just Gold. And the promotion was for Gold.

It makes little difference now, I am switching provider at the end of this month. Dealing with the above described willful ignorance and arrogance is not something I choose to endure any further.

You and Leon both had the opportunity to accept it was a very poorly communicated promotion and there was no intent to missell - but your attitude since shows utter contempt for your customers. YOU HAVE THREE HERE TELLING YOU THE SAME THING.

Even your HAPPY customer is congratulating you on how effectively you missold to him:

Can't help to feel kind of stupid right now though....not sure if I should congratulate you on that piece of marketing or what because you definitely had me.

As for this:

You are making out as if we sold you a Standard Uncapped product for the cost of a Gold product. This is false. You are on a Gold service level, with Gold priority.

Um... you are quoting me in very same post saying that you sold us Leon Gold when we thought we were getting Gold. Complete strawman to say I claimed anything otherwise. Strawman is a nice way of putting it.

I'll still stay with OpenWeb GOLD, I love OpenWeb and MrBEEP's help, and the speeds and policies are still waaaaaaaay above everyone else.
i'll also accept it if I don't really have the "real" gold package, my speeds are good.
(Except for last week during the day with usenet though)

Openweb is great.
What is a problem though (not my problem, but a potential problem for openweb) is that they have too many damn packages... seriously how many internet packages can one have?

-Vanilla Uncapped
-Standard Uncapped
-Silver Uncapped
-Gold Uncapped
-Gold Uncapped Unshaped
-Platinum Uncapped
-Gamers King, Downloaders Bling
-Gamers Delight, Downloaders Right
-Super Edition Uncapped
-Standard Uncapped (Ivory Edition)
-Standard Uncapped (Love Edition)
-Silver Uncapped (2 Connections version)
-Gold Uncapped (Original Edition)
-Gold Uncapped (Leon Edition)
-Gold Uncapped (Orange Edition)
-After hours Uncapped
-Business Uncapped
-Soft Capped ADSL
-Budget Capped ADSL
-Local Only ADSL

Am I the only one who thinks this might be a little confusing to new users?

It looks like you forgot the Gold Uncapped Promotional edition that started this whole "incident" / revelation / slippery slope scenario.

I also feel some clarification is needed from Openweb. At least in the form of a comparison table to indicate all their offerings and what differentiates them.

I too am a happy Openweb customer for the most part, but I now certainly am less inclined to jump at any offer at face value.

One might even suggest that the ASA comes into play in this case.
