Openweb Hiding Uncapped ADSL Usage?

Could anyone explain to me why Openweb choose to hide usage statistics from their clients?

Being an Openweb, shaped-uncapped ADSL client, I would like to know how much data I use per month and even per day - Obviously we all know why it is important for the client to know their usage, but Openweb can't seem to see it (Hint: Clients like to make informed decisions too).

I contacted support and was replied to with:
We do not log usage stats on uncapped accounts as we feel it goes against the essence of what uncapped stands for.

Ok fair enough, whenever you see my stats, just block your eyes, and forward them to me - A win for everyone!
(Strangely enough, a few emails later, I received my usage for the month - So was the first reply a lie?)

A few weeks later I email again for my usage stats (it's very backward, I know) and get this weird reply:
This is no longer being monitored due to the practises of some of our competitors who throttle folks after a certain amount of usage.
If we do not log usage, we cannot throttle you.
That's some really weird logic they've got going for themselves over at Openweb. If they do not log usage, they cannot throttle - Therefore If they do log usage, they throttle you! (I feel sorry for the capped users, if this logic is true)

And in one of the emails, they tell me:
The clients have chosen not for us to log usage
I'd like to know which client chose not to track their usage? Anyone here?

By the way, I still haven't got my usage stats for December, which they refused to give me (although they did for November) and its really painful to have to email to get my usage (And its only monthly, and not daily)

I wonder if Openweb are going to change this?

Why don't u just request an account that has usage monitoring? As a default they don't have usage monitors.

Out of curiosity, What informed decisions do you need to make on usage on an uncapped account?

Yea I, like a lot of people prefer not knowing/caring about how much I use per month. I do not "compete" with anyone to see who can pull the most per month ( I know someone who does....*cough*afrihost*cough*)

As asked by akescpt, what could you possibly need to know the usage for?

What? I was not given this as a solution? Well it could be because it was just an automated bot called Leon Witherall responding to my messages.

Is there more info on it? Do I pay more? Change my account? etc... But I'm a bit afraid due to the "If we do not log usage, we cannot throttle you" logic - Its frightening to be honest

All I want is my usage for each month. That's all.

So it was you!! lol.

Well what would I do with the knowledge? Well firstly, any knowledge is good knowledge :)

Here's a scenario: I'm on a shaped uncapped package that gets heavily shaped during working hours. If I see my usage at the end of the month is round about 100GB, I can choose to pay a bit more and opt for and Unshaped Capped package, right? Its the more feasible option.

So that knowledge helped me make a very good decision, yes? That means knowing my usage can be of great importance to a client. There's so much more you can do with that, and even more by knowing what you use per day!

Its just a great tool - and unfortunately, my ISP does not offer it (and I'm not even sure about that).

MrBEEP has said that when the new CP goes online next year it will bring some new features. Usage logging being one of these features. I see your point though and I would suggest something like what Keeper has suggested. If not, try and PM MrBEEP asking about the logging being activated on your account.

Use a program like NetWorx.

The only problem with that is, it does not work when the computer is off. I have multiple devices that connect via WiFi, and this will lead to an inaccurate result.

Don't you have any usage logging on your router?

You can also get a rough idea of your usage from here if you are on the IS backbone

Code:
http://users.isdsl.net/

NOTE: ROUGH MEASUREMENT +-15%. ALSO NOTE: Openweb manages their own IPC capacity, and the IS logger may show more than one concurrent connection for that username and password. This does not mean someone else is logged into your account, it only means you are using the same capacity pool as another person (which is what you pay your ISP to do anyway).

Not to me.

The whole reason I am on uncapped is so that I NEVER have to worry about usage.

Wanting to know your usuage is only useful to YOU. The ISP doesn't log usage so their clients don't get throttled, unlike MWEB. & you're complaining that this ISP is saying, "Hey, we don't throttle, so there aren't going to be any usage stats, coz we dont care. Download all you want".

If you want to know WHY the ISP didn't give you the option to monitor your usage, is the same as asking Pick 'n Pay why they didn't give cooking instructions with all the food you bought there.

Stop complaining. If you don't like it, move to another ISP.

Simple.

What kind of bug crawled up your ass?

This is a stupid thread.

I do not want my ISP to monitor me, ever! Openweb is very unique in that they do not care how much you have downloaded. You should be happy about that, but now you complain.

The less companies know about me the better.

Omfg. People will complain about anything it seems. OP if it bugs u sooooo much rather go to mweb. They have nice usage tracking for u

No offence but that sounds totally fake to me.... Why would the usage tool work exactly like its designed to but with openweb accounts there are some "other" explanation......

Just saying. That usage tool is correct for every IS reseller that I used from incredible connection to plugg to buzybuy.com and random small resellers. For me by the looks of it it looks like 1 account has more than 1 person connected to it.

Try using your openweb account credentials here:

EDIT: Whoops, sorry that someone beat me to it. Whenever I wanted to check my usage, I used to always use the IS Portal (url above)? I dont see why it would be inaccurate

OW manages the IPC themselves, they do not just resell accounts like most other ISPs do. This has been debated ad nauseamthe OW thread.

Perhaps he uses too little for uncapped and would like to know this?

But... How dare this blasphemer wants this

Gets in line for flogging
