For the past few days the Openweb/IS news server has been getting progressively slower. Uncached coming in at 15mb an hour, then 12mb an hour and now all the way down to 3mb an hour. Is it like that for everyone? Is it time to cancel my debit orders and move to TelkomInternet? :(

Buy a Web Africa 1GB prepaid SAIX account (local - R19 per GB I think), and try the saix news servers.
Then decide.

SAIX is now horrible speeds. But since yesterday I had my connection maxxed on uncached nzb so I will say SAIX is a good option. They are much better that IS news server I suppose.

Hahaha this is soooo funny. Im sorry guys but SAIX seem to be on fire. Im maxxing my internet connection with SAIX and its all uncached!

Hmmm so it seems you have problems too on SAIX....

The question is can I get the following on SAIX :

* 1Gb international at least
* 30Gb local (ok let's make it 20Gb as with current speeds there is no way I can get 30Gb with IS in a month!)
* Something like OpenBrowse which allows me to still surf internationally?

....and all that for around R250 per month (excl Telkom costs of course)

Yes, the IS speeds are bugging me this last week and I am willing to ponder options....

I would say yes. SAIX is much better than IS. I read a guy got just under 6GB of downloads throught the night with the saix server. Not sure how true this is but I think its very possible to finish a 30Gb account in 1 week on SAIX. So you decide. Maybe get a test account or buy a account and if you dont like change back to IS

...but what about the important part of for around R250 for all of that?

Saix local is R15 per gb however if you go with TELKOM INTERNET then they give 10gb of local per 1gb of international e.g. 1/10 acc for I think R79 , only problem is you need to use your international before you can use that local only amount...

My advise a 3 gig telkom acc as this gives 30 gb local and then a 1gb prepaid voucher from engen (axxess) @ R79 to keep you using international via routesentry or some such...

Telkom also make you sign a contract...

Yup it's finished, time for everyone to cancel :)

TelkomInternet 2GB Int/20GB Local is R159

OK so there are options but I see mention above that Telkom makes you sign a contract... I am currently on a month by month basis and like it that way. Do all these options above allow that?

And an important part of my ideal scenario is being left out in each instance and that is something like OpenBrowse to allow me to use that local bandwidth to surf international sites. Do these suggestions offered above allow that?

Hmmm you see this is what I really don't like with Telkom....

NEW capping policy w.e.f 1 February 2008 ~ Once your service threshold and collective threshold have been exceeded, you will be placed within your allocated Local Only bandwidth which is on promotion. As you will not be capped on local bandwidth, we reserve the right to bill you for anything exceeding the allocated local bandwidth that is on promotion. The charge for local bandwidth is R25,55 per gig. If you desire international surfing you can top-up your current username with additional blended bandwidth.

The whole marketing thing with ADSL is based on you not getting any surprises when you get your bill!

So if i go away, keep a whole bunch of downloads going, my speeds max out, I could come home to a nasty surprise........?? Not sure I like that idea. Rather hardcap me!

I also don't like the part which constantly refers to "on promotion" on their website re the local bandwidth. It gives a distinct feeling that it is not cotractual and could be taken away at any time, leaving me stuck with 1/2/3Gb only and no local!

is it possible to have telkom set a cap on one's account, in order to prevent a massive bill at the end of the month should i overuse the account or the account get stolen?

Go to http://www.telkomsa.net/, products, access services. There's no contract.

Personally I don't prefer Openbrowse, I'd rather use a prepaid account and a local account together with Route Sentry

There is but only if you want the 'free' modem.

But yeah - looks like popularity has driven the final nail into the coffin. Who'd have thought.

but the question now is after IS died and saix is soon to be dead. What Alts is there to this which is cost effective though i guess that its back to torrents and paid news servers...

Hey Friends

I am sorry to hear you are having problems with the IS News Server.

I have logged a fault with the IS Support Centre. I am hoping to hear from them shortly regarding this issue.

Kind Regards
MrBEEP

Hi guys

I'm afraid they have not yet indicated the cause of this problem.

I will update thread when I receive news from the Service Centre.
