Hi All
I recently got my ADSL line installed and is using CyberSmart as an ISP for now. Since they make use of SAIX and not IS I cannot get to the IS News Server. Oh and it is only 3GB. I since have canceled my CyberSmart account and will be needing a new ISP from the beginning of March. (Damn one month's notice with CyberSmart) I am interested in the "192-IS-2GB, 2GB, IS & OpenWeb, Up to 30GB, 192k, R219" account from OpenWeb. That should give me 2 GB International, 28 GB Local and 192k OpenBrowse after my International CAP. Since this is on an IS backbone I should be able to get to the IS News Server. Is this a good choice or should I look elsewhere.
Regards
Dawie

IMHO it is the best choice out there.

Do keep in mind though that the IS news server is (at best) unreliable.

Search forums for "news server" for more.

dude u need to read about routeesentry

because those 2 / 30 gig account chomp the int bandwidth first leaving you with only local

moeder is slow not unreliable

it works every day for me, yea at between 12-16 kbs but ive download nearly 24 gig this month so im happy

Yeah man, rather get Route Sentry and get yourself a SAIX and IS based account. It works best, especially if you are playing games as well. I play online and download with my 30 GB account all thanks to route sentry.

I cant really complain about the news server. Everything that I downloaded so far flyed ! I also downloaded 21 GB this month already, and still going strong...:)

Ye it works well on my side... im on a 384k and ive done 35gigs this month so far...

Yep routesentry.
3gig cybersmart and 10gb web africa...nice:D

i got openweb 30gig local only, openweb 2/30 account , webafrica prepaid when im in trouble or IS giving problems........ :) (and using routesentry as i said further up)

Thanks for the info guys. I was thinking about keeping the CyberSmart account and just getting a 30 Gig local account from WebAfrica but CyberSmart is full of #$%^ about using another account with their one. So I canceled it. I have read about RouteSentry and I have friend that is using it as well. So maybe I will get like a 2 Gig SAIX account from WebAfrica with one of their 30 Gig IS local accounts. That should work lekka.:p

or get a prepaid webafrica account :) then you can add gigs when you please, and the unused gigs carry over........but thats if you not gonna be using international to download much

Hi, where does it imply in the T&Cs that you can only use one account?
In my interpretation (point 4 of Cybersmart T&Cs) it means that you can't have 2 cybersmart accounts connecting from the same location. I do not believe they can track different ISP accounts from the same location, nor does this condition imply that you can't do this. The T&C does not say 'you can't have us and someone else as your ISP provider'.

If you are correct then consider, is Cybersmart implying that they don't want you to use your line for anything else other than ADSL which is connected to them?. How exactly do they track what is a fax or a voice call or something else. Yes I'm sure there are ways, but do you really think they would do that? For a start it would be a breach of privacy to track events on your line. Therefore the only thing they can do is track a Cybersmart accounts because it's communicating with them

I do not believe they have a legal right to deny you using another service, that would be considered anti competitive behaviour, and destroys the meaning of free choice. I find it difficult to believe that Cybersmart would stop you from using another account or black list unless you had done something wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't see in the mist of very ambiguous wording in the T&Cs that would force you in keeping your business with just them.

Well here is what the CyberSmart site says: "You can only use one account at the same location- if we detect multiple accounts connecting from the same place, all subsequent accounts will be treated as top ups and you will be charged the top up rate." I understand this to say that only one account can be used on your ADSL line and that is your CyberSmart account. I might be wrong but I do not want to take a chance and get billed for 30 Gig of traffic at 9c per MB. That will work out to a lot of money. :(

PS: I have nothing against CyberSmart. I have only had the best service from them but I would rather not test their terms.

The best bet would be to ask them. But I say this, they appear to be talking about multiple Cybersmart accounts connecting from the same location, and that's when they nail you. They speak about accounts. If they meant other ISP accounts they would have to say other ISP accounts. But they don't. They have no legal right to bill you for using data provided by another ISP. It just seems improbable. To back up my argument they say 'additional accounts at the same location will be disabled' which proves they are talking about multiple cybersmart accounts. They can not disable other ISP accounts. They do this because their top up rate is more expensive then buying a 2nd cybersmart account, thats why they want to restrict you

That does make sense but it is too late now anyway. My CyberSmart account has been scheduled for cancellation. I still have a month with Cybersmart and will give them a call tomorrow morning to find out what is what. If I am allowed to use another ISP then I will get a 30 Gig Local account for that month and download myself to death. :D

Let us know what they say. Frankly, I've not bothered to ask. It just seems unlikely. And the ambiguous nature of the T&Cs show that they may want you to be unsure. Unless it's just badly written because it certainly looks like its been drawn up over a few beers

Obviously cybersmart isnt exactly "smart" since there is obviously a fear of multiple accounts from the same location, there is obviously a exploit available because of this. Since it involves multiple connections with the account from the same location I could guess that this would be the exploit.

1) Connect and download like hell for 23h50min
2) Connect a 2'nd time (by using another pc or the same one depending how you want to work it) and then disconnect the first account.

If they work by calculating the bandwidth when a account disconnects and then cap or not accordingly for re-connection you are getting a extra 24 hours out of your account which is probably why they treat it as "top-up"

I say the above because I hope that is the case, in the past other ISP's have had that vulnerability and fixed it, if cybersmart has it they better fix it too so their customers can use their service as they wish.

Well I gave CyberSmart a call this morning and they confirmed that you can only use their account on your ADSL line. This is due to support issues only though. They sell some customers routers with their account details already inserted. Now if that customer tries to change the account details because they want to try to use another ISP and makes a stuff up, CyberSmart will not offer support to get that fixed again. So that is why they do not allow any other ISP accouts while using their account. :( What they did however say is that they will not be able to detect the other ISP if you are successful in changing the details on the router. :D

AllBrain good work! I'm pleased to hear that there is no way on earth that they'd know you have 2 ISP accounts. Just don't call them and tell them that fact then you'll get away with it:D . This view by Cybersmart is merely an idle demand and no one is bound to it. I'd ignore it anyway.
