I use a 6Mbps titan account. Browsing and most general internet things work fine. However YouTube won't load and downloads go at 10KB/s ;(. Is this a sign of throttling? I'm told by OW that it depends on the time I download and all sorts of rubbish. I can only get good downloads after 12am which is when I want to be asleep. Am I being throttled to death? I had awesome internet service from them last month and the start of this month but I'm not sure what's happening now. Speed tests show good results also. When I asked Zelda how much I have to use before being throttled she replied that they don't throttle which I really don't believe.

I will be OpenWeb free as of Mondday. Their service fell apart over the last couple of months.

Using titan account which is entry level but this really bugs me. I've never heard of an ISP shaping to 10KB/s. I can't even use Google docs properly.

They will tell you its your line. Then when you prove to them it is not they will give you a new account to test which should be ok for a few weeks if you are lucky and if you are not sharing it with anyone.

This does in fact happen. It use to happen with me all the time when I use to have their Gamers King account. I would rather be using a Afrihost home uncapped account if you are looking for something in the same price range. At least you can see how much shaping is applied at any given time. Web Africa home uncapped is also a good option.

Openweb will just keep u in the dark about how much shaping is applied. Just not worth it.

I know I sound cheap but I'm not the one paying for the account my dad is. Anybody know of an ISP with a good uncapped price with decent speeds all round? Was with open web before but was being throttled down to 30KB/s from December till February. Maybe something like 4Mbps or 2Mbps.

BTW I've been asking Zelda why speeds were good last month but not thus month and she kept going off topic. Damn I seriously wish all areas had fibre and internet was dirt cheap. Not some luxury. But yeah we first need to sort out other issues in our country I guess

Give Crystal Web a go. You will be pleasantly surprised.

I was an Openweb user for 2 years, and I must admit that I got to ride the gravy train for a long time before things went south.

I started with a 1Mb uncapped promo for R109pm and it worked pretty well. After a year it pretty much died on me, so they gave me a new account. It was slower than the old one, so I complained and they adjusted the contention for me ("Loyalty reward") to the point where it was even better than the old account. I could see that I was sharing this account with another user, but I didn't care because it worked so well.

When the time came for our lines to be upgraded to 2Mb, my account worked at my full line speed, so I was over the moon. Things worked great until the end of April. I started experiencing packet loss, and things were generally slow. Live streaming of news channels was impossible.

I knew that If I complained to them the odds were that I would get a 1Mb limited account, since that was all I was paying for, so instead I waited a while to see if things got better. By 15 May, nothing had improved, so I decided to call it a day and submit my cancellation notice. I continued to use the account up until the end, because even though packet loss was high, download speeds were still quite good, even during business hours, dowloads worked at 120KB/s.

By 25 June, things started working properly again (no more packet loss). I had assumed that this was due to the large number of cancellations, and in hindsight I was probably right. Even so, it was tempting to revoke my cancellation and give them another chance. Sanity prevailed in the end, and I stuck with my cancellation.

I'm now using Incredible Connection's 2Mb uncapped for R99, and a 20GB capped account with Afrihost. I haven't looked back since doing this. It may be throttled, but at least I know where I stand with them, and when I need unshaped data, there's the Afrihost account.

Is the incredible connection account good? Also how do I know if I'm sharing an account on open web?

Well you are better off with a directly resold IS account. Openweb has control over shaping so although its IS based its really bad speed.

IS accounts seem to open up and go to like unshaped from 5pm to 7am and from 5pm Friday to 7am on Monday. During the rest of the time your stars will depend your daytime speed. 3 or less stars means it will be shaped but not to 10KB/s.

With IS accounts daytime speeds will be like 40KB/s for 2Mbps uncapped account, 65Kb/s to 150KB/s for 4Mbps uncapped account and roughly 200KB/s to 300KB/s for 10Mbps uncapped accounts. These speeds are a real estimate and you might get more or even less but that is what I have gotten on the accounts.

Direct IS account based resellers are ISP's like Incredible Connection,Vox uncapped products,Nexus ISP and BuzyBuy,

Okay thanks. Which ISP can you recommend but I need cheap prices. Willing to pay R300. Not capped though.

It depends on when you want to use it most, and whether you're willing to schedule large downloads between midnight an 6am. The 2Mb option isn't on promotion anymore, but the new 4Mb option for R199 is pretty appealing too.

To check if you're sharing, go to userstats.adsl.saix.net. Not sure if this works on MTN backbone uncapped accounts.

Check for days where there were 2 or more active sessions. If any sessions clash by more than an hour, your account is very likely being shared with someone else.

I've noticed that one of the accounts I had with them is still in use to this day. I'm sure it was the same user I was sharing with at the time as well. :D The password is still the same, but the joke is, I was the one that requested it be changed from 1122 to the current password.

It eventually kicked the user I was sharing with off the account for a few days, but it wasn't long before the user returned. So I presume, he/she was given the new password which I had set.

Its hard to say because you used a 6Mbps uncapped account. So I assume you have a 10Mbps or 6Mbps adsl line.

I would have to recommend the 4Mbps account from connection.co.za for R199 or the 10Mbps uncapped account at Vox for R399. Sadly there is no in between.

No actually I have a 2Mbps line:p. I just took it to get Max speed.

Some days had 11 0_0.

Should I confront them about the account of users?:p

Some of those sessions could be you disconnecting and reconnecting. Check a little closer to see if the times clash with one another.

If your account is being shared, confronting them about it is an exercise in futility. They will deny it, or try to fill your head with some meaningless jargon to try and convince you that your account isn't being shared.

They blocked access to userstats.isdsl.net as this provided a more comprehensive list of the users connected to the account at any given time.

Best just to submit your cancellation, and be done with them.
