Hey Friends,

It was revealed to us at 3 am, that at 21:00 last night there was a cable break causing major issues for Telkom exchanges. sigh.

I do apologize!

Restarted my router and speeds went back to normal for a few minutes, but now I'm back at 240-260KB/s. 4Mb Gold (VB). My other isp accounts running at full speed.

Critical Network Notice:

There is currently a fault causing issues on our Gold and Lite Uncapped networks. Main router has failed. Backup router is currently running, however, slower speeds will be evident. Engineers are attending. ETA: 3 hours

We apologize for the inconvenience

Please remember to follow our network notices on Twitter: OpenWebNetwork

Hey Friends,

The main router was replaced yesterday. Thank you for your patience.

The networks will take a few hours to normalize though.

Kind regards

Hi all

New signup as of beginning of Feb 2011 on 4mb uncapped gold. I'd like to ask a few questions regarding this service. I see there have been some technical problems in the last few days, so please excuse if the issues I raise are simply related to these.

1: I'd like to ask what people's general experiences with streaming vid and internet radio are on this service? I was unable to use radiotuna this weekend, it just kept stuttering. I generally also have to start, then pause videos in order to let them cache fully before watching.

2: While I know that torrents are going to be heavily shaped during business hours, does this service work similarly to some others in being less choky to torrents after hours and on weekends?

3: I hear a lot of mention of VB and IS accounts, which I assume are vodacom biz and internet solutions. Can someone explain how this works in the context of the uncapped gold accounts? Does one choose one or the other? What are the two networks good for, etc?

regards
Ref

Hi Ref,

1. Streaming after hours on IS network is good. I can't comment during the day as I'm at work.

2.Torrents will be shaped a lot most of the time, a friend of mine on IS backbone gets decent speeds for his 2mbps line. I don't dl torrents, maybe someone else can comment on them?

3.Keoma gives you an account, if it isn't performing due to various reasons (area, line sync, exchange congestion etc) he will give you another backbone to try. The ones I'm aware of are VB, IS, siemens business (bcs I think). I think there are more and it is mainly dependant on where you stay. VB users say that the shaping is less during the day. It is more dynamically shaped meaning the shaping is on network load. On one day I managed 15gb during the busy period (8am-5pm).

I wasn't too impressed with the overall experience on VB in cpt though, so Keoma moved me to the IS backbone. For December and January I have dl over 1tb. It is definitely worth the extra money.

Keoma is also a workaholic. He is very committed to keeping us happy. You won't regret your choice to move :)

On a side note, Feb hasn't been bad by any means, but the speeds are definitely not as good as Dec and Jan, however, still much better than mweb shaped... I guess 2011 is in full swing now (everyone back at work)

Update...

Popped OpenWeb a mail, just to confirm that I hadn't been moved to an after hours package by mistake. Got a reply within minutes, that my port was reset, and I should reboot my router and see what happens.

Local is now going without complaint. International is better (seems between 60 - 75KB/s), but still not "proper" for a 4Mb line. However, I'll wait till after the Seacom maintenance finishes before I stress too much.

Have to say, after having to wait a minimum of a day to get a reply to a support mail from my previous ISP, I'm very pleased with the speed with which OpenWeb responds to their clients...even though I think Keoma must be getting pretty fed up with me by now =]
