IS has a news server, but it's slow and only caches for about 5-7 days.
Most guys use paid providers, newsdemon being a popular one.
 
Oops. I know VB is bad for torrents. I thought the guy I quoted was talking about nntp :o

I'm on OW 4Mb Gold uncapped. I am a Premium user for Rapidshare, MegaUpload and Filesonic, and I subscribe to AstraWeb for UseNet.

I find during the week, downloads are not so good, even after hours (I find I'm shaped into the ground for just about everything during business hours) - I only max my line for an hour or two, round about 4 to 6 am in the morning; on weekends it picks up a bit, and I get reasonable downloads with a decent number of hours at max line speed.

Would I do better on VB ? I notice some good things have been said lately on this forum about this back bone. I am not a torrenter or a gamer at all.

So my question is: Which is better for file hosts and UseNet with a 4Mb Gold uncapped account - IS or VB ?

I used to have VB for MU / FS / NL / RS - Worked brilliantly, all hours of everyday, until something happened at Telkom which meant i couldn't use VB anymore. I am now on IS, and am battling to do a few gigs a night off these premuim accounts. Weekends are a little better, but i'll queue 3 gigs at 5pm and the next morning the same 3 gigs have either stalled or are 40% complete. I don't torrent, but torrents work on IS and not VB.

I'm having the same experience this month... requested to go back on VB - but I seldom get above 200-250 at anytime on 4MB... hopefully it pics up at some stage.

Upload Speed: 379 kbps (47.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 233 ms

Download Speed: 746 kbps (93.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 395 kbps (49.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Shaping really sucks. Started the first one 16:59 and the second one at 17:02.
2011 and SA is still living in the 90's -_-
 
Have a massive download going - been going since Monday evening and speeds looking good all the way (> 300KB/s). Love my OpenWeb account.
 
Need something for torrents after hours,

Used to get 400 - 460 KB on my 4MB line on torrents, now maxing out at 200-250KB most of the time, had a test Account of OpenWeb After Hours uncapped, for a few hours, ran at 400-460KB,

From what I've heard BCS sucks for torrents.

VB sucks worse for torrents.

Dude. You do realize you have a shaped account right? If you want torrents fll speed 24/7 you need to pay an unshaped account. MWEB's one starts at R2000p/m.
