OpenWeb VPN: Why So Rubbish?

I really want to like the OpenWeb VPN offering but unfortunately I have been unable to use it properly. I signed up for a 10gig 384K account on Tuesday this week. So far I have managed to use it twice for about 30 mins. I am using it on Mac OSX. The VPN connection doesn't get dropped it stays connected but the connection speeds basically start out fine and then dwindle to nothing after a few minutes. Reconnecting doesn't help the problem either.

These are my ping times to google.com just after connecting the VPN:

PING www.l.google.com (66.102.9.147): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 66.102.9.147: icmp_seq=0 ttl=238 time=416.161 ms
64 bytes from 66.102.9.147: icmp_seq=1 ttl=238 time=426.205 ms
64 bytes from 66.102.9.147: icmp_seq=2 ttl=238 time=426.145 ms

And these are the ping times after 3 minutes:

64 bytes from 66.102.9.104: icmp_seq=1 ttl=236 time=3318.116 ms
64 bytes from 66.102.9.104: icmp_seq=5 ttl=236 time=1857.625 ms
64 bytes from 66.102.9.104: icmp_seq=6 ttl=236 time=3822.119 ms
64 bytes from 66.102.9.104: icmp_seq=9 ttl=236 time=5145.705 ms

If I disable the VPN local browsing is ok. Not faster than my other SAIX account which is a pleasure to use in comparison. Its good to see that some people on these forums have had good experiences with this offering, but so far I cannot say the same. Anyone know any good local torrent accounts? I might as well try and get my money's worth since I am now stuck with a 10gig local only account for 3 months.

Are you're talking about their OpenBrowse product?
Mine is now 12 days old and has not worked once.

But, I did get what seems to be 1 GB of Blended on my 10GB Local-Only for R70.
Now that I've used up my 1 GB Blended that I never asked for, suddenly I need OpenBrowse to work and .. no .. login failed.

And ... no support on Weekends from this ISP!

:crying:

Edit : Something else could be wrong ... but ... I cannot ask them, so ... bleugh

OS X VPN Issue

I really want to like the OpenWeb VPN offering but unfortunately I have been unable to use it properly. I signed up for a 10gig 384K account on Tuesday this week. So far I have managed to use it twice for about 30 mins. I am using it on Mac OSX.

Nice to hear of another Mac user around here. I've just signed up with OpenWeb VPN service. I have been able to access local and international through my local only account (!), but have not been able to configure the VPN. Can you advise?

I was given a VPN user name, password and host name. When I attempt to enter the info into the VPN panel of OS X System Prefs (10.5 Leopard), the terms don't seem to quite line up with what I see there. I also seem to need a "Shared Secret" Machine Authentication (??). If I simply enter in the three pieces of info I have, then the "Connect" button stays greyed out - unclickable.

I'd be grateful to know how you set up the VPN so that it actually connects. Thanks for helping out a newbie.

These are the steps I used to set up OpenVPN on my Mac.

1. Open Network Preferences
2. Click the little + button on the bottom left corner under the connections list
3. Select VPN for the Interface and PPTP for the VPN Type, give it a name like Openweb VPN
4. In the server address put: vpn.openweb.co.za
5. Enter our account name you received from Openweb e.g. openvpn786
6. Make sure Encryption is set to None.
7. Click Authentication Settings, select Password and enter your password.
8. Click the Apply Button
9. The Connect button should become activated and you should be able to connect, unless you have got your username or password wrong.
