After the recent launch of new versions of both Opera and Firefox the usual browser preferences discussions were abound.

One the features that was discussed was adblocking. Just out of interest I would like to see how Opera compares with Firefox on this issue.

I have Opera's Urlfilter filter loaded with the exclusions listed here (both the ads and counter lists) [Opera 9.5]. Firefox 3.0 has Adblock Plus 0.7.5.5 installed.

All I need the forumites to do is suggest links of sites (the more ads the better) and I will provide screen shots in both browsers.

Anyone else that wants to be a part of the testing is most welcome:).

  20. Blocked by Nod32 for dangerous content.

After first twenty on list, both are tied at 17/19 [89%].

Awesome!
Did you notice any differences in page loading speeds?

In my experience FF outperforms Opera in that area. When I use Opera I often have "wow since when does this site have ads" moments. Plus I like the Element Hider helper plugin.

Do you have the full block lists loaded as suggested in my OP? Please post links to such sites so I can include in my survey.

Missed that...I thought you meant Opera's built-in blocker.:o Please ignore above comment.

Opera's urlfilter does pretty much the same thing as Firefox's adblock plus - without lists loaded both just have the function of allowing you to block specific content manually by creating a rule.

So all you need to do to make Opera's urlfilter just as powerful as a Firefox's (or vice versa) is just copy the rules across:).

I have used both, Opera's seemed a bit clumsy to me. Thus i prefer adblock, always have - its one of the plugins that keeps me on FF. If Opera had the ability so support plugins/extensions like FF does (NOT widgets - blegh) then Opera would probably be my browser of choice.

For now my trusty FF is my friend :)

Different strokes for different folks:) But like I said Opera's Urlfilter loaded with an Adblock Plus list would block the same ads as Adblock Plus;).

great thread on how to have an adblocker type thing for opera.
