Operating hardware by brain control?

So if this guy is working in a plant, and he thinks of killing his boss because he is an as*hole?

Whats the price tag on this thing? Official manufactures website?

EDIT: Googled it :)

But since all instructions are logged it would be easy to audit and prosecute... unless say, someone remotes into yours via VNC java on port 5800 while using TOR then commits the crime...

Seriously though... we will have to learn to think straight, at least there is an extra step with doing it manually. Can you imagine a scatterbrained person the day after the night before with a few redbull and vodkas plus flu meds making a mental call to a powerful machine?

Let's just say it won't work in SA.

I dont see how the NIA would help in a panic situation, let alone a "thought-controlled" device.

Personally, I go through many scenarios in my head, thoughts muddled, brain processing, some half-actions are carried out. Not many thoughts are actually useful.

I doubt that any person would come to the absolute best choice in an instant, where this type of device is useful. Humans need time the lag time from when your brain says: "Push the RED Button", and all the time it takes to get to your muscles, and your hand to actually get to the button ,for your brain to say: "NO NO NO Stop, I meant the BLUE Button!!!".

So NO, this is not useful for any Factory/Process Control. Too little gain, too much risk.

It won't work in most industrial Plants, anywhere in the world (It might in the not-so-near future, after further development and testing)

have you guys seen this thing in action? once properly trained to the operator this thing could fire off commands MUCH faster than clicky clicky enter.

Exactly my point. Chernobyl *cough*

The lack of knowledge the article writer demonstrated is staggering... The Emotiv Epoc isn't 'recent', not unless you can consider roughly two years ago 'recent'.

Worse still, the bit about 'operators'; this device is calibrated to work on specific brainwave wavebands as its operational criteria. When you're in a stressful situation such as a nuclear power plant going haywire, the last thing you want is for powerful thoughts along the lines of "what if I did this" to be immediately picked up, processed as a command and executed; manual hands-based control is better for this, as moving your mouse over a button or your hand towards a control dial/switch gives your brain time to reconsider your choice where the Epoc software may have already picked it up as a command and executed it.

Worse still, having someone become confused and unable to focus would cause there to be a mixture of signals picked up by the device, which may ultimately result in no commands being executed. While this guy is then sitting there trying to focus on what he needs to accomplish, all hell breaks loose, while he could have been operating a keyboard and mouse.

This device doesn't 'read thoughts', it reads brainwave intensities (EEG: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EEG ), and only that.
This kind of device is ideal for non-mission-critical applications as well as 'safe' activities. Testing of these devices for use as car-driving instrumentation has been performed, but a lapse in focus on the driver's part or sudden confusion can cause things to go terribly wrong, which will ultimately have dangerous results. The kind of control where an entire system can be controlled with nothing but the mind at high speeds etc is a long ways off, in large part because it would involve getting past conservatives for its potentially invasive nature; namely being able to read with great accuracy what its user is actually thinking as opposed to relatively ambiguous data.

$300 not bad for such a powerful tool. Science fiction type gadget

RE. Operating hardware by brain control?

In all of human history this has never happened because the hardware has a brain of its own which operates quite independently of the rest of the body.

From personal experience I know that hardware turns to software (and vice versa) at the most inopportune moments.

Use the force Master Luke... do or do not, there is no try.

heh, what they don't show you is what you look like wearing that wierd thing...

hmmm this would be the coolest game controller ever!!!! from the developers site it seems they already have demos but this is def
something to keep an eye on :} a little flash back to the lawnmower man

...?

Hardware turns to software? They are totally different, in every way. Hardware cannot "become" software, no matter how much you wish it to.

And, hardware has no brain of it's own, that is what we call software. Either you are very confused, or you are intentionally derailing the thread.

Re: "In all of human history this has never happened" - Lots of things never happened until they did, infact that can be said for everything. "In all of human history, we never used cellphones, because people would never be able to communicate without being face to face" is just as misinformed as your statement up there.
