I have a family member selling a 2005 1.4 Clio for 30k with about 75 000km on the clock.

I'm looking for something for the fiancé and if I only have to spend 30k it would be great.

Are there any common issues or major problems to look out for (besides being French ) on these cars.

It's in immaculate condition with a FSH and only the headlights need polishing and the aircon pump needs replacing that we can see.

AC pump. +/- 8k? I am assuming you're talking about he compressor? Pull plugs and check for oil on them.

Theoretically great cars. Light on juice.

Unfortunately french is not a byword for reliability in that era.

Also if you had to recon that motor... would you find oversized pistons.. all the seals, etc from the local part houses?

30k is a decent price, and it's a well specced car with low mileage. Services with the dealer generally end up being around 8k though.

For that price i'm not expecting much, just need it to be relatively reliable and am just concerned about show stopping issues that this model may have. I'm hoping that with the low mileage, it cant be too stuffed.

This really has been a case of "1 lady driver, to church and back" :D

Car will be serviced privately.

Is there a Goldwagen equivalent for french cars?

It's not the oil change that's expensive, just that there's always something that needs replacing and the parts aren't cheap. But if you do it privately it should be fine. Maybe just keep 10k or so aside for in case. For 30k you're getting a decent car that's not bad to drive and has power steering, airbags, aircon, electric windows, cd player, decent sound etc.

If you need to replace something like the aircon compressor don't take it to renault, rather go to an aircon place.

CAMBELT! Drive from the seller's house to a good service shop to get it done immediately

Genuine Renault oil filter as about 60% in price of a GUD/Fram filter at Midas/Autozone.
I speak from previous experience
well lets test that. If the op can go to renault and get pricing as soon as he has the car.

I have experienced similarly from BMW autohaus monti. oil and filters are cheaper than midas, however goldwagen is still cheapest.

This is on E30 service kits.

I serviced my Clio December 2014 and here is what I paid for filters

From Renault, for a 1.2 Clio 2

Fuel filter 119.81
Air filter 170
Oil filter 71.14
All prices excluding VAT

What I can say is that my brother drove a 2004 Clio 1.2 for 4 years and he drove that little car extremely hard and was always hitting speedbumps at pretty horrifying speeds and the car just carried on and never gave him any issues. He once had it serviced and they messed up the HD leads causing huge power loss but we had that fixed at another dealership as Renault wanted like 12 k for it when they were the ones who messed it up! He sold it in 2011 and it was no worse for wear than when he bought it. Not a bad little cat at all.
