Hi guys. Looking at building a new computer. Budget is 11 grand. Here are the components I've come up with.

Display Samsung 21.5" (1920x1080)
Power Supply Corsair VS Series 550w
Graphics Card Nvidia GTX 750ti
Memory Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3-1600 (2x-4gb)
Motherboard Asus P8H77-M Pro
Processor Intel Core i3 3250
Chassis Raidmax Viper GX Gaming Chassis
Storage Corsair Force LX, 128GB
Storage Seagate Barracuda 1TB
Flash drives SanDisk Extreme 16GB x2

Good build? Any suggestions? It'll be used for relatively light - moderate gaming, Adobe product use (Photoshop, Indesign)
and the usual entertainment stuffs. (opted for Flash drives instead of DVD rom because I don't use CDs/DVDs anymore).

i3? 8GB? Seems you could get more for R11g... buts thats my opinion... maybe other gamers can comment
 
i'd personally bump up the cpu to atleast an i5. The rest seems fine.

Nowadays the hard drives are the bottlenecks in most systems, so good idea on the SSD
 
I would go for a Sharkoon PSU and Chassis. I have both the Corsair PSU and Raidmax Chassis and the Sharkoon equivalent comes across with more options for a lower price.
 
Also, why are you going for previous generation components? I'd highly recommend that you go for the Haswell series CPUs!

Is there something in particular that you need from that expensive motherboard?
 
I'd up the SSD if I were you. Min 256gb
 
Bump up CPU to i5 and you should be good, don't you have an existing display?
 
Consensus is definitely an i5.

Do have a display but it's broken. Line running vertically and it's 1280x1024.

I would get 256gb but the idea is to only have Windows 7 and essential programs on SSD, with everything else sitting on 1TB HDD. I have this setup
on my other computer and it's working out fine for me, for now. Perhaps look at upgrading to a 256gb Samsung Evo Pro 850 next year.

Not too familiar with cost and performance over previous generation CPU's. Is it worth it? If so, can you recommend a specific motherboard and i5 CPU?
 
where you getting that i3 and for what price?

I bought by i5 -3470 for R1300 second hand.
A new i5 4th gen starts at R2300

A new i3 gen 4 costs R1400/R1600 (no GPU, onboard GPU)
I know an i3 gen 4 can stand it's ground, even beating the FX6300 in most games.

You gonna want at minimum a i5 2500k. The only problem is if you get one it'll probably be 5 years old already, mine for example is 2 years.

Btw that case is pretty cool, using it to build up a PC for someone I know.
Just note that it has 3 USB3.0 connections on top, so you gonna need a motherboard with a USB3 header if you want to use them.
And from my experience it's hard to find a gen3 motherboard with those connections and not much easier on a gen4, depending on budget of course.

edit: Ok that board you posted seems to have it, but it's a micro-atx so must note that if your graphics card is big you gonna lose all those extra pci slots.

Also note it's a sandy bridge.

I was looking at Takealot which has the CPU for R1,400.
Not too much worried about lack of PCI slots. Only popping in a graphics card.

Will look into Haswell CPU and motherboard and see what I can find.

Perhaps I can lay off about a grand or so on the graphics card for now to get a better CPU and motherboard. The computer will be used mainly
for DOTA and other such light games. So a ~R1100 card should be more than capable of dealing with that. :)
 
All good suggestions so far but you're going to have to prioritize among them. e.g. 256gb is going to nuke the budget.

Think you can do better on the display side though and Pada raises a good point on the generation front.

I'd also suggest throwing in at least one cheap 8gb flash...useful for bootable media. e.g. Having one flash with bootable windows on it.
 
Ok, so I've hunted around Takealot and have come up with this updated list. Total comes to R11,061. Laid back a bit on the graphics card, got a 1150 motherboard and an i5.
Left the Flash drives for now, I do have a couple laying around so it's not essential. Can use them for booting windows/linux or whatevs.
I can't find any Sharkoon stuff with Takealot. I'm not too phased about it. I've had good experiences with Raidmax and Corsair PSU's so I don't mind sacrificing any extra features for these.

Thanks again all, for the suggestions. If there are any others after this updated list, please shout, will be ordering tomorrow. :)

Edit: I could probably look at getting a 23" monitor. It's just that they're sitting at ~R2300.
I see there's a 23" Philips for R1900, though. But I'm not sure of their quality.

Hmmm.

After looking at that build you made there I think we change things a bit and use that spare R300 I had. We can upgrade the CPU and just go down a step in graphics, which is still better than the gfx in that takealot build btw.
