It'll be the best thing you could ever do for your family, boet. Follow Davemc's advice and try keep your house if you can.

You can't buy the stress relief of Knysna VS joburg with money. If you're not materialistic and super outgoing and keen on traffic jams and smog like mrs Blunomore, then you'll love smaller towns. For the kids you have endless awesome hiking trails, the lagoon and wolf sanctuaries / snake parks close by. Even the cango caves etc. is a day visit away.

When I described in my earlier post the benefits or living in a city, did I mention money anywhere ? Your reading comprehension ... it sucks ;)
 
The location is fine...........
Most who have posted all agree that it appears to be a fantastic place to stay. However, nobody has considered the career prospects. You arrive and love living there but the job doesn't meet up to your expectations.
What now?
What happens if you need to find other employment? How easily will you be able to find employment in your field of expertise?
It's a small town and good jobs will not be as availible as in the city.

It's been siad quite often: "The only way to leave the Garden Route with a small fortune, is to arrive there with a big one."
 
We moved from Jo'burg to Knysna exactly two years ago and it was the best thing we EVER did. My husband commuted weekly to his big job in Sandton for a year and then bought a business in George.

Knysna is ONLY traffic-congested during high season, and normally only between 10am and 2pm while the tourists shop. Besides, SuperSpar and QuickCX will deliver anything you want if you don't feel like braving the congestion for those short few weeks. George Mall is not far, but there are not many boutiques there so if fancy clothing and shoes are your thing you will need to go to a big city every now and then.

There is PLENTY to do here. We are NEVER at a loss. And I don't go on holiday very often any more. I AM on holiday here.

With a small child, we effectively already lived in a "village" in Bryanston/Sandton, going to school, friends, work etc in the area. We shopped at the same few shopping centres close to home and every now and then had a formal event to get dolled up for.

It's much the same here. There is very little you can't get here and as for gadgety things, I just get them posted from the big smoke.
There are a LOT of ex-Gautengers and ex-Capetonians moving here and we have made very good friends with like-minded people. Finally after two years I am breathing easy, sleeping properly and am not on high adrenalin alert for the baddies like I was up there. We have VERY good policing here, mild weather, a low crime rate and happy friendly people. The ONLY other place I would live if given the choice would be Perth where my sisters are.

dude seriously - take it up. if there's nothing holding you back - grab the opportunity and make the most of it.

pretty kewl deal you've been offered by fortune - so don't let it go to waste.

I was offered a job there by a contractor. I wanted to move to CPT but needed to look for a job, now I'm offered one :p

The city has a lot of conveniences in terms of choice, etc.

There is an expo or exhibit or speciality store for anything you can think of !!

You can meet like-minded people on any subject/hobby/activity under the sun.

But to me the absolute best part is the anonimity of living in a city ... if you want to make friends, you can do so .... there are millions of people to choose from ... but you can also be alone and go incognito. The whole city will not know what you did yesterday, what you wore and what you bought .... I lived in a small town for about 8 years ... very stifling ... you get discussed, judged and dissected no end!

Couldn't agree more.

I live in JHB, still young, but I love the fast pace of the city. I don't have a problem with Pretoria though.

I have to travel to a few of the smaller mining towns on a regular basis for work and I can't imagine living in a small town. Everybody knows everyone else in the town :erm:

Everything I mentioned in this thread.

I would love to go, but leaving everything I have back in Gauteng is a point I need to evaluate. It feels that if I take this offer I can go and live in what I assume to be paradise. But then on the other hand with such a big move it alsmost feels like I would be emmigrating :D Then I might as well move to Germany and get it over with. I just don't know. I really would love to go there, but what if in 6 months I feel like I have made the wrong move?

Seriously dude, if you have this many questions when moving inside the country, don't think about moving abroad! :D And after 6 months, if you don't like it, pack everything up and move again! Become a nomad/gypsy, but go to a place where you can be really happy, and get out of the smog! ;)
 
i would never want to live in knysna, takes for ever to get to the beach, i dont like the people and traffic is horrible in the mornings :) thats why Plett is sooo much better in every single way... i'd say.. rather move to plett

I know quite a few people that moved from Joburg to PTA. All of them say that they'll never go back to Joburg...

When in doubt, do without. This whole area has a certain vibe, style of living. It is very different. It is definitely not for everybody. The people who stay here WANT and are commited to the lifestyle, no matter what. If you are thinking of just moving down and trying it out, don't. Do yourself a favour and spend some time in the area before you make a decision

Folkestone, Kent ftw. Knysna with no traffic jams and the Euro tunnel terminal is a 10min drive away
