We all have seen the optic fibers being layed all over the country. My question is this :

How does Optic Fiber technology work? Do you get a telephone nr? How will one ISP know when your jumping from one to the other, if the cable is already at your home? You will need something to connect you to your address? Like telkom knows your telephone nr and can change your service....

Whats the maximum speed on optic fiber?

How does Optic Fiber technology work?
By pulsing light.

Do you get a telephone nr?
You most certainly could.

How will one ISP know when your jumping from one to the other, if the cable is already at your home?
Same way as any other technology.

Whats the maximum speed on optic fiber?
Limited only by the devices on either side. The speed light can travel is your limit.

Speed of Light: 299 000 km/s.

So in theory, latency to London would be 40ms.

(12000/299000)

optical fibre technology is awesome. A friend and I managed to download from 2 PC's with a total download speed of 35MB/s today :D

Total internal reflection or if you prefer pictures this.

Currently the speed is limited by the technology that is sending/receiving the light pulse & that will remain the limitation for a long time.

Theoretically the amount of light one can jam down a fiber is also limited, since it will melt given enough photons and if that is somehow overcome, then you'll also get quantum effects.

A quick google tells me that current tech allows for 1.6 terabit per second (One strand of fiber).

There was a very interesting article about cheaper fiber optics a week back. Might be interesting for fiber to to the house technology.
