So here's the story:

I took my PC to a PC shop to upgrade my motherboard, CPU, RAM and harddrive.

Back at home after picking up my box, I swapped out the DVD drive because the older one was IDE and the new motherboard had no IDE. Then I put in my Win 7 DVD and switched on the PC. The screen stayed blank.

Checking I discovered they never plugged in the power into my graphics card.

I did that and switched it on again. Then I discovered that the PC was trying to boot off my old hdd when I specifically asked that it should not.

So after unplugging my old hdd I proceeded to install win 7.

This was Tuesday 4 Sept.

Wednesday afternoon I switched on my PC and heard a strange noise. I thought it was a wire on one of the fans. Turns out a small square piece of plastic was loose inside my PSU.

Now when I switch on the PC it just boots for about 5 seconds then switches off again and repeats the cycle of switch on and off.

Now I am scared that it has damage my mboard. Will I be able to return the products for a full refund because of this?

Was there a "Warranty" or "Do not tamper" seal put on the box anywhere that you had to lift before opening the case?

If this is the case, your warranty from their service has been voided and it might prove to be extremely difficult to get anything out of them. They can argue that you installed a faulty PSU or messed around with something in there.
If you have a recognized qualification (e.g. CCNA), you can argue that you are qualified to work on a PC without voiding the warranty.

If there was no sticker to prevent you from opening the case's door, you might have a bit more luck.

Overall, if it can be proven that they were at fault, you can be refunded. The CPA protects you against defective parts, but I think in this case the results will be dependent on the attitude of the place you bought the equipment from.

MrSnyders, thanks for the reply.

There was not Warranty or Do not Tamper stickers.

I have tried it with another PSU and get the same error.

The CPU fan is struggling to start. All the other fans run fine. I tried plugging the CPU fan into the sysfan connector, but same thing happens.

Well, seems they don't care about covering their own backsides, you might be in luck and have it repaired/replaced. Maybe just swop out everything to be as when you got it back from them.

Have you tried booting from your old hard-drive?
Does the motherboard give any sequence of beeps when booting? (short/long, number of beeps)
What is the power/wattage rating of the PSUs you are using, are you sure it's enough for your new set-up?

PS: I'm not an expert by any means, but eliminating possible issues might just help.

Strange. they didn't test PC before handling it over to you. Adding the plastic part in power supply to the story, it sounds horrific!

I am regretting the purchase, it was with Computer Mania.

I took my box in yesterday, complaining of the start and stop. When I picked it up they said nothing was wrong, they just had to fix my windows. At home I plugged it in and the same thing happened, the start stop, but after waiting a while it goes on. Then it wants to repair my windows of which I now have 2 installations??? Inserting the win 7 dvd to repair and it just hangs, freezes on me.

No idea what's wrong, but I bought the motherboard, CPU, RAM and HDD Tuesday! It's friggin 3 days old.

Really considering asking for a full refund.

Where are you from, if you want to I can have a look at it for you, I wont charge you or anything, but atleast when you go back you can tell them exactly whats wrong.

I'm in Worcester so unlikely that you'll be close by.

I thought it would be easier to do it through a retailer so if any product is DOA they could facilitate any returns etc. Really regretting it now :(

Yea thats very far from me :( , I normally steer clear of pc retailers, there simply isnt a need to use them any more, and the majority of them seem to have dodgy tactics with the clientele.
