Oracle buys Sun Microsystems

This is a big one for the industry. Not sure yet what I think. Came out of the blue. :D

How long before the Base component of OpenOffice gets bodily ripped out and replaced? :D Still, I wonder what this means for Java development ..and what about Slowlaris?

Not to mention MySQL. Oracle now own and control their biggest free competitor. It's time to start using PostgreSQL.

Let's see how Oracle's lock-in policies collide with SUN's open policies.

This is sad :(

Sun is awesome. Oracle not so much.

I fully agree! I think this is definitely not great for the software industry as a whole!

Sun has done a lot for the free software movement and Internet technologies in general

I am a HUGE proponent of MySQL and hate Oracle as a DB. Now that MySQL is owned by its biggest competitor, I wonder what changes we can expect...

Definitely time to check out PostgreSQL!

I must admit though at least Sun wasn't bought out by Big Blue. That would have been worse, I mean IBM had an opposition product to pretty much every product Sun was pushing.

Excellent move. After years of hardship with Oracle in .NET (OK host array insersts are awesomely damn fast!) I am glad to see the two companies I dispise most getting it on together. Now die ! :p

Very sad :(

Sun was and is one of the great hardware and software innovators of all time - a bit like Apple. Oracle is just a large, ugly software company that thinks its software is better than everyone else's - a bit like Microsoft. We can only hope that Oracle doesn't rip the heart out of Sun.
