Would have preferred this update to come out so i can use this months cap, oh well, i wonder if everyone will become medics now :p

& as for the backup thing, if you copy your entire steam folder to new pc and install over it, everything will be as it was before (no updating), did it last night so i know it works ;) or when you in steam, you can right click on the game and say backup and choose which games you want to backup. This creates an install file for all your games in the folder \steam\backups but as said earlier, it takes a while to backup but installs pretty fast when used.

I find that as long as steam is kept updated it works well cept for a few things like when it says "Scanning for updates" and you have no idea how long its gonna take...

Yeah sight and that is also a great idea if you want to LAN TF2, alot of people think that you need multiple copies of TF2, to be able to lan it. Wel you dont need that.

All you need is a single internet(ADSL, Broadband etc) connection, and a pc that has a legit copy of TF2 installed with all the updates for it, and the steam installler.

Now you install steam on all the other PC's and update it(or you could just copy the steam updates from a frend). The updates from steam are relatively small.

Then you need to copy the "SteamApps" file, From the PC that has TF2 installed, to the SteamApps file of the other PC's.

Now you run Steam using The username and password of the Steam account that has TF2 registered on it. When it logs in succesfully, you should be able to see "Team Fortress 2 - 100% ready.

Don't play it yet. Now Go to The upperleft corner and click on File>Go offline. Now Steam is running in offline mode:) You should be able to play TF2 in offline mode.

Now do this on every PC's, one at a time, I know its time consuming, but hey in the end its worth it;)

To host a server, just go create one in-game, and the other player join(Click on the LAN tab to find the server, not the Internet.)

I dont know why i actually posted this... I just tried this last night and it worked, just thought i'd share it with you guys:)

Cheers!

I was given an orange box for xmas, I tried to install it and it complained about a missing DLL, I searched the DVD for the file but it wasn't there, I tried downloading steam and installing that first, but it didn't help either.

I'll stick to console gaming, thank you very much.

When I first installed the Steam client it too complained about a missing dll. Once I open my firewall for it, all was good. A little odd that it didn't moan about not being able connect rather than a missing dll.

All in all, I like Steam. It would be nice if we had some local content servers though. Even so I find the most of my updates/downloads go at around 250KB/s.

That would be cool. I thought of petitioning them for this (local servers), but I doubt they would go for it, SA must be something like 0.005% of their revenue.

Would you guys stop basing Steam? It's not their fault your downloads are slow/big.

Bash the Telecom's in your country! Steam wasn't made for SA you know...

I've tried Steam in the States and Korea (and it was a dream)

It is, actually, perhaps if they'd done better testing before releasing, one wouldn't require such a big download to make it work.

Testing??? The majority of games bought are from first world countries, that have good line speeds.

Why would they ignore this market for a country in Africa? Or any other place that earns less money to pay for games and have slow internet speeds?

And are you suggesting that Valve should sacrifice graphics, story etc. so a country with little bandwidth can play games (again we are not Valve's majority market)

Yes, testing. If they tested their software better before releasing it, one would not be required to download hundreds of megabytes of 'updates' to get their software to work.

Not at all. The graphics and story, etc should be on the installation media, not coming down your internet connection.

Oh sorry, didn't realise you meant the updates not the game itself:eek:

Are all online PC games like this? Suddenly feel a bit deterred from getting it.

Only 2 posts - both bumping old archived threads ... Not nice. Your question is also a bit out of place imo. It is like asking "Are all cars like this?" - what do you mean with "this"?

Incidentally I do have something to add to this topic. I tried installing the steam client on my eee pc today but it bombed out with that missing DLL error. Once I connected it to the internet it started up, updated itself and finished the installation without a hitch. :)

Haha gotta love steam!

@Joze - no not all online games are like this. Steam is not really the most friendly of software packages ever released. Kind of annoying most of the time. Not all games use steam, some are electric or petrol driven :D

Could never get it why people say they downloaded 9gig to get their half life updated. Now I know why. Useful info for the future. Btw is the bug still there or has it been fixed?
