Order ADSL from Telkom or wait for SNO

Just a thought for all those thinking of ordering an ADSL line from Telkom. The SNO says, "Our ADSL services are currently planned to be launched during the fourth quarter of 2006."

That means that if you waited till the fourth quarter you will get ADSL sooner than if you ordered it today from Telkom. And I am not kidding.....I waited eight months for mine.

I really have my doubts as to whether they will be able to roll out ADSL by 4Q 2006. And, if they somehow do, it will only be in the major cities
But you never know

why do u doubt they will be able to do it?
 
cuz they still need some sort of local loop unless they get it from telkom and in that case its still going to cost about the same as it does now. And they say they will be rolling out in stages so it may take a while till we see things happening... Plus they still may need to iron out some bugs on the network... So get Telkom ADSL and switch later. I got mine in 3 weeks so maybe u can too...
 
Well I am prepared to wait a few months and see whats coming. I am back on dialup + sat. Stuffed Telkom ADSL up theirs! Even got some good refunds.

Drawback; Got so used to have 24/7 my last account is R1048.00 + Sat R299 (Unshaped and uncapped). For my kids sake Maybe will be forced to go back to 24/7 TelescumThieves 192K ADSL + Sat until SNO gets going.

What can I get for R1347.00 I may ask? (If only Telkom did not cap and Throttle I would have paid this with pleasure.)
 
Telkom does not cap... at least not less than about 20GB... But some people do 60GB on thier Telkom account.

The fact that Telkom does not cap and does not charge for excess usage, but they charge the ISP's if their customers go over the limit, seems to be grossly unfair to the ISP's.

How can they be allowed to get away with this? Surely ICASA is abliged to act against Telkom for this. I know ICASA has no teeth but still, it seems so wrong.

This no longer seems to be true
Telkom just seems to be introducing caps gradually:
- Dec at about 60Gig
- Jan at about 20Gig
- Feb at about 12Gig
- Mar at about ??Gig
 
i doubt we will see the sno getting into broadband for a few years

where did you get that info from?

It is grossly unfair...

Unfrotunatly ICASA does not regulate the bandwidth side of things.

Telkom will reduce the cap more and more as more people sign up... remember Telkom averages thier bandwidth using speed not GB's so as network usage increases cap's decrease.

Does this mean that ISP's will at least have another choice in regards with providing bandwith for ADSl users from 2nd Quarter 2006 ? or are we talking dial-up here?
 
I dont see them having any sort of backbone up and running by Q2 , they've still got tons too do and they haven't even started employing in mass

The backbone is already in place (it's transtel's)

The backbone is already there... It's the last mile that is going to take a while, AFAIK they're going to use WiMax in addition to normal copper.

I've heard they're outsourcing everything (quite a lot of tenders are out ATM), so they don't have to employ that many people to set up the network.

Unfortunately this all hearsay. :cool:
