Hi I am considering doing this. Has anybody on the forum bought one from an online etailer before...? Can you maybe recommend sites that would ship to SA that are trustworthy ...?

I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing but the camera isn't available locally yet and it would cost waaaay more here even after adding import taxes.

B&H Photo Video is the name that usually gets thrown around when wanting to import. Give them a go.

I've dealt with Adorama before, but I was actually in the states so I did not look to see if they ship abroad. Couldnt find fault with them in my few experiences

I get most of my gear shipped over from Adorama and B&H. Very reliable.

Just a suggestion, but might it not be worthwhile to contact a company like sacamera & find out if they're expecting to add it to their range in the near future?

Looks a damn awesome little camera!

They have the previous version still available for R3700 ish. The new one will no doubt cost around R5k here is SA which is just too much IMHO. Has anybody ever used these guys....?

Yes it looks like a very Hardy little camera. We get wet quite often or are hiking in rain or waging through rivers :p so a waterproof camera would be just perfect...!

Tax hmmm well As far as I know tax is calculated as (Price for your item) + 10% + 14%

14 is for the guy and 10 is for shipping tax, inport duties and stuff. This is what the lady told me at Fedex.

Try this : Helen at Customs 0214485043

I Have also spoken to the guys at nikon sa about warrenties and they said

"

"

Happy shopping

I take that as a no....?

In any case was emailing a few local camera shops and all of them said it's not available except for Digital World which have it for R5099 at the moment. *sigh*

sacamera is 100% legit - that I'll happily vouch my pinkie finger on. Not that it would matter if they're going to ultimately cost you more than importing it yourself.

The other guys said it was new at the supplier. I have a feeling the guy at sacamera simply didn't check. That said like I guessed the price will probably be around R5K here whereas it cost $399 most places except for the shop which had it for $333 which I listed above.

Is that specifically for cameras? 10% sounds quite high. Unless she meant that the VAT is calculated as value * 1.1 * 0.14.

Ya that sounds about right.

14% of 110% of the value of the camera.

I set up a spreadsheet for import duties a while ago based on a conversation and email with some SARS person.

You can grab it here: Camera Import Duties.

Just change the currency back to Rands - don't know why it does that...

Here is a post I did about how to calculate it: Previous post.

Hope that helps.

Ok so help me out here...according to your formula what would the import duties be on an item that costs around R3300 (where shipping is already included in the price)...?
