Hi Guys,

I'm wanting to order some PC parts from Amazon. A motherboard, graphics card and tower case. Prices seems to be alot better then parts here. I've ordered some Crucial RAM before and it arrived so quickly and had no issues. It got here even before the Amazon tracking app said it was here.

I was just wondering if any of you had order bigger items like motherboards and graphics cards and if they arrived fine. Always a bit scary ordering tech stuff from overseas.

Obviously the warranty part of it is an issue. But just wanted to check what other's experiences were.

If it doesn't arrive "fine", you can easily have it returned to Amazon. What you can even do is open it in front of the courier and not accept delivery if there's any visible damage.

For the general consumer, Amazon is a great marketplace, but you will have to shop between Amazon US and Amazon UK to get the best deal (incl. shipping). Amazon CA also have good deals, but shipping to SA seems to be very limited. I have never had an issue with Amazon, also being lucky enough to never have returned an item due to warranty.

Every GPU and peripheral that I have ordered through them arrived as expected, also sooner than stated.

Awesome thanks guys!

Luckily I can get all the items I want from Amazon US and the prices are god. How long did it take for the items to arrive. I now when I ordered the RAM it took like 7 days. Which is crazy fast!

Yah, usually 7-10 days. My experience.

What is the import tax and other costs like with purchasing from amazon?

Depends on what you're ordering. If they deliver to SA it'll be calculated for you in cart.

If they don't deliver to SA drop me a message and I can help you out.

Import costs are higher than I expected.

The total cost of the items I was ordering was R17k, and the import costs and duties was another R3k. So I added the same items to my Takealot cart, and its pretty much the same. So maybe I'll just stick with buying local. I think it was a bit better better the dollar jumped up so much compared to the rand. let's hope the dollar-rand exchange comes down

I only purchase on Amazon when they have +40% markdowns on items or when a seller has a legitimate deal, or when the item is rare and unavailable in SA. Also, I stick to the marketplace currency because switching to Rand at times makes things more expensive, including the duties. Then best to keep the total order below R25 000 as you will need an import license otherwise.

Says "used" though.

That is a scam, there are known Chinese GPUs which is not the actual advertised GPU. Lol, I see the GPUs had already been removed. The card which was advertised in the link was an Zotac 1080 AMP! priced at $229, then a $249 and $279 price bracket, screams scam.

Ah ok, was $582 when I looked.

Take care - loads of dodgy offers listed on Amazon especially electronics. For high value items I buy exclusively from Amazon now (i.e. Seller and dispatcher = Amazon)

You can filter by seller in bottom left.
