What does orthodontal treatment cost these days?

I've had a request from the youngster to have braces, and the first thing that comes to mind is "a close friend has just got braces", but of course if a dentist confirms it necessary the we must k@k n betaal, but not having medical aid the decision doesn't come lightly.

Any advice welcome.

I would imagine you should sit down when you hear the amount :D. It is going to depend really on how bad the kids teeth are, i have braces for nearly 4 years. Some people only need them for 1 or 2 years.

So i doubt you will get a very good idea on the forum.

I didn't think that it was needed, but don't want to make a decision based on my unqualified opinion, but knowing nothing about this was looking for pointers.

I think I'll make an appointment with our trustworthy dentist and make a decision based on his recommendations, and price of course - not being on medical aid it's coming out the limited savings, so price is a factor.

I do not want to know what it cost now. Mine was R 35 000, and that was 10 years ago.( had mine for 3 years)

But maybe it is better priced now. And a good dentist will not give a child braces until their mouth and head has fully developed.
OR it will just move back. And they should have their wisdom teeth removed early or else ( like mine) your teeth will move back.

Looks like they do not like saying what it cost. They do not want to scare you away.

Do not let this kid go without braces should it need them. They are just amazing, when i was a kid i could stick my thumb inbetween my bottom and top teeth and even though my parents struggled they still managed to find the money for them and i will forever be grateful to them for that. Generally it is not a once off payment so it won't be like you need to drop 15k straight up.

You do not need a professional opinion on the price though as we do not know the exact state of the kids teeth.

Medical aid doesnt cover the full cost and sometimes they dont cover it at all (my case)

I forked out R18500 - that is after 6 visits already costing R1500.00 per visit. - this for my son

This can be regulated like Pharmacies and doctors. They charge just what they want.

I had braces installed about ten years ago. It cost R10k back then just for fitting the damn things. Then I had to visit the dentist every month to have adjusments etc. Had them for about three years. And ja, it was worth every rand.

My med aid didnt cover a cent, in spite of the fact that a maxillo (sp) surgeon decided that it was necessary to correct my jaw alignment. Liberty just said it was cosmetic and wouldnt budge on this (thieves - the lots of them). I have the top of the range policy - Platinum I think.
I think Discovery is the same, they might say they will pay, but simply transfer out of your own savings account.

Mine were around R40k (fairly extreme case.)

I required the extraction of 4 teeth to 'make room' and wore headgear at night for 2 of the 4 years that the treatment took to complete.

It was the worst medical treatment I have undergone, bar none. It is positively medieval, seriously: no one expects the Spanish Inquisition.

However: I am very grateful for having had them - my teeth are very neat and I think that my case may have resulted in a speech impediment had it gone untreated.

Also: my wife is smokin hot and I fear that had I not worn braces all those years I'd have been even farther out of her league leaving only my sparkling personality and whip like wit to close the deal. :erm:

Silliness aside: teeth are a well known subconscious indicator of health and thus the suitability of a potential mate. If your kids teeth are really bad you may be putting them at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to finding a partner by not doing this for them.

I agree with everything. I still sometimes wonder if the torture of going to the dentist every two weeks was worth it. And the pain for days after that :(

Mila it was for sure, that pain was bad but damn a few years of pain for a life - time of straight teeth is a great deal i reckon.

I had braces for 2 years about 8 years ago. They had to remove 8 teeth. I will find out from my parents how much it was later tonight when they get back from work.

But yes, it is worth every cent in the end. I haz a purdy smile :D

I "readjusted" mine after a superman move courtesy of a flight of stairs. Some stitches later, and a short while of loose teeth, bucktooth-bwana was no more.
