Orthodontal - Braces ?

I do not want to know what it cost now. Mine was R 35 000, and that was 10 years ago.( had mine for 3 years)

But maybe it is better priced now. And a good dentist will not give a child braces until their mouth and head has fully developed.
OR it will just move back. And they should have their wisdom teeth removed early or else ( like mine) your teeth will move back.

Looks like they do not like saying what it cost. They do not want to scare you away.

Thanks to all for the good info here - the prices mentioned have most certainly been a shock.

Mila, do you recommend that a 15 yo wait say 5 years before going ahead with this?

BTW, my hunch was right, a good friend has just had braces fitted - he's parents are very well off.

Our dentist, has never suggested braces in any of the recent visits - I'll be getting his opinion and will go ahead if recommended by him - we'll have to eat ramyon for a few years (don't need smart looking teeth for that).

Mine was fitted round about that age. And then most of the growing has been done. Also have to do with when all your baby teeth is gone and the others has settled.

But i did grow very slowly:o Gary came to visit me late in my 14th year for the last teeth:D

What does orthodontal treatment cost these days?

I've had a request from the youngster to have braces, and the first thing that comes to mind is "a close friend has just got braces", but of course if a dentist confirms it necessary the we must k@k n betaal, but not having medical aid the decision doesn't come lightly.

Any advice welcome.

My daughter (13) has braces at the moment. We don't know how long they'll be in for, but the treatment is a flat R32000 or so; the orthodontist structures it a a base payment plus the balance evenly split over the next two years. So far Discovery has covered it 100%. Not painful, though a bit uncomfortable the first couple of days. There were a few preliminary appointments over the last couple of years, also charged for, and my daughter also had to have 4 teeth extraced by the dentist.

After the braces have done their job, she's off to the maxillo-facial surgeon for jaw and palate surgery. That's going to be *very* expensive. ith luck, there won't be an issue with medical aid; this is certainly functional, not cosmetic.

i used to have a gap in my teeth when i was young but they straightened naturally.....i feel sorry for ppl who cant afford to get them fixed up.i once had a chance to hook up with this real sweet, charming, cute and awesome gal but she had a HUGE cap in her front teeth which put me off so much.its just one of those things.... like my friend who didnt date the hottest girl in school because her feet were nasty :p i know its rude but you cant help noticing it when the person speaks
