So, over the last 2.5years i've installed and uninstalled a lot of apps and made some accounts and removed them and then added some new ones, upgraded(not reinstalled) to Snow Leopard and added some RAM. Most of which happened in the last couple of months.

In brief, I'm using my iMac like any minor geek would.

But I've seen some issues *dramatic music here* with OS X lately. It's nothing major I guess but things just aren't running as smoothly as I thought It would with 4Gb of RAM (previously 1Gb).

-issues with menubar at startup
-Have to Relaunch Finder often (once a month or so)
-Issues with Fast user Switching

Question: Do you guys do any maintenance of OS X? What kind?

I run Applejack every once in a while and Disk Warrior if I'm feeling bored.

I've used Onyx for the past few years. Best maintenance software out there imo.

Run Disk application in utilities folder and repair the permissions on your HD then boot into single user mode and run apple jack

Thanks guys.
Wil try out AppleJack have heard about it before and what i read sounds good.

I've been running OSX since Panther. Our machines in the office are mostly around 4 years old, but they are all Intel based bought just after the switchover. When OSX was updated with Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard, I always did a clean install and then moved my files across (not using the migration assistant). Our machines work perfectly. The machine I currently used was restarted 18 days ago and other machines haven't been restarted often. In fact they are only restarted because of lightning storms or power cuts. Most of the machines have 1GB or 2 GB ram.

You should not be having these issues.

I think the two major differences with me is that I'm installing uninstalling a lot more apps and I din't do a clean install of the OS when i upgraded (didn't have time).

But I agree that OS X is a very stable OS. The issues I'm having aren't major at all. I guess I'd like to reinstall 10.6 because I like clean Operating systems.

Damn shame we have to install all kinds of crap on our machines; Dropbox,Evernote,CreativeSuites etc. ;)

The only extra app I use for maintenance is App Cleaner (free).
Then just use the built in disk utilities and manually run the maintenance scripts.

Info from http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html

Using your Admin account, you can run all three maintenance scripts at once:
1. Open Terminal, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
2. At the Terminal prompt, type the following, exactly as written:
1. sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
4. Press Return.
5. Type your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
All three scripts will run in sequence. There is no visual feedback while the scripts execute. You will know they are completed when the Terminal prompt returns.
You can also run the scripts individually. For example, to run just the daily script, you would type the the following command in step 2:
• sudo periodic daily

There's nothing like a fresh install to clean your Mac up and make it super fast again. You just need to backup the right files and you'll be good to go.

AppleJack is apparently not supported under Lion. I use CleanMyMac and especially with Lion did a clean install and restore via TimeMachine.

I'll second that... macboer, any reason you haven't switched to Lion yet?

Used to do that Onyx and other stuff, but these days, the only maintenance I perform is making sure I don't fill my drive to capacity. Leave some free space for the OS to defrag with and have swap space. Performs better that way, otherwise OS X takes care of itself, in my experience.

Looks good, the auto removal of mac-droppings would be nice to have but not really worth the $30 for me.

I'll stick to applejack (yes, it still works under Lion just fine) for now.

Ja because I do a fair amount of dev work, I can crash my machine pretty easily so I do in fact enjoy a little bit of maintenance every now and then. AppleJack gets the thumbs up but I still find a clean install once a year or so does the trick better than anything else.
