Nathi Mncube, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, has cast doubt on the defence interpretation that Pistorius could serve as little as 10 months before being considered for house arrest.

Mncube says the NPA believes he would have to serve a third of the jail time – around 20 months – “but it’s not for the NPA to decide”.

He adds that the NPA has an “appetite” to appeal, but has not made a decision to do so. Both sides have 14 days in which to lodge an appeal should they choose to.

All those whining about five years being to little, did you actually follow the court proceedings? Especially the bit where the prosecution asked for 8 years? The judge was never going to go with a 12-15 year sentence after Nel only asked for 8.

SUSPENDED SENTENCE NOT APPROPRIATE: MASIPA

A suspended sentence imposed on Oscar Pistorius for shooting dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp would not be appropriate, Judge Thokozile Masipa said on Tuesday in the High Court in Pretoria.

"The present case is so serious that a suspended sentence would not be appropriate in my view," she said.

"I am of the view that a non custodial sentence would send the wrong message to the community on the other hand a long sentence would not be appropriate as it would lack mercy."

She said a long prison sentence would "break" Pistorius but a suspended sentence could mean that society lose faith in society.

Masipa sentenced Pistorius to five years for Steenkamp's death.

He was also sentenced to three years, suspended for five years, for firing a pistol under a table at Tasha's restaurant in Johannesburg in January 2013.

The sentences would run concurrently.

On September 12, Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide on for the Valentine's Day 2013, shooting Steenkamp in his Pretoria townhouse. The court found him not guilty of murdering Steenkamp.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp through the locked door of the toilet, apparently thinking she was an intruder about to emerge and attack him. She was hit in the hip, arm, and head.

Pistorius was found guilty of firing a pistol under a table at Tasha's restaurant in Johannesburg in January 2013. He was found not guilty of shooting through the open sunroof of a car in Modderfontein on September 30, 2012, and of illegal possession of ammunition.

Will he get house arrest after 10 months? He's not politically connected, and the ANCWL wants a harsher sentence. I see him sitting for a couple of years at least.
 
I have a problem with people moaning that justice hasn't been served, it doesn't make a difference to me if it was 15 years or 5 years, it still leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth, that a life has been taken, I don't think any amount of prison time would make up for the loss of life.

Nor would death penalty make up for it, nor will money paid to the victims family either, he did a terrible thing, I don't think he has any or little remorse.But on the bright side it is some thing that has destroyed his life, and it is some thing he will have to live with for the rest of his miserable life, here's hoping that society in general will shun him and deny him opportunities to succeed....as he denied some one else of those opportunities....

His arrogance and lack of respect does make one want to slap him silly....and shout "Rek jou reg chom, of ek gaan jou reg bliksem...."
 
Wonder what he will do for a living after he gets released. Still amazes me how someone who had so much has now lost it all.
 
June Steenkamp says she is satisfied with the sentence. Look, if he got the 8 years that the prosecution were aiming for then he'd still be out on house arrest after only 16 months. Now it's a 5 year sentence and he might be out in 10 months. Not that much difference.

He wasn't found guilty of murder. So 5 years is not exactly getting off lightly if you look at how our legal system works.
 
PISTORIUS JAILED FOR FIVE YEARS

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years in jail for the culpable homicide of Reeva Steenkamp, by the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.

For discharging a firearm at Tasha's restaurant he was sentenced to three years in jail, suspended for five years.

Both sentences would run concurrently.

As the court adjourned, Pistorius, looking weepy, made his way out of the dock and down the stairs to the holding cells.

As he descended the first steps he touched the hands of four relatives standing above him, a woman in a pink outfit, a woman in a navy blue blazer and skirt, and his uncle Arnold and wife Lois.

His brother Carl went down the steps soon after that.

Steenkamp's father Barry said outside the court: "[I am] satisfied with the sentence... [its] now time to go home."

His wife June then walked in front of him as they made their way to the their car.

listen it doesn't matter if he has to serve 10, 12, or 15 months. who wants to serve ANY time in prison to be honest. I don't that's for sure. he will be in prison for Christmas, new year. he won't be allowed to gain from any book deals he may or may not want to publish that is a given fact. any convicted criminal is not allowed to benefit from any publication from a crime he has committed. this jail sentence will for sure make him think about what he has done and how he has fallen from that golden throne he was once so proudly sitting on top of.

He will be back home in 10 months. It does matter!!!! In my opinion, he should spend 10 full years in jail.
