Our old flag

1. I was not part of any racist remarks or issues in my whole life.
2. I gained nothing from appartheid to this day.

So what is it that your crying about ?

Should we all now hate the Union Jack because of what Brittain did to us all white and black ? Should we all hate the US flag for what they did to the Blacks in relation to Slavery ?

Your comments score no relevance to the subject.

Do not fool yourself my friend. You gained a lot under aparthied. Firstly, it ensured that you were born of parents who access to a quality education, health and basic human dignity. Through companies created by the aparthied government, you were born from parents with ample employment opportunities. Your parents had access to all that, whetther they chose to use that access was their perogative. My parents never had that. Aparthied put you in front for the race to success just because you are white.

I am not crying. I was pointing to you that the flag might remind you of better days when whiteness equalled extreme priviledge, but to some of us (make it a lot of us), the flag is a reminder of dark evil days where skin colour made "boys" of our fathers and made us ashamed for their sake.

N.B:I think I have met you before on a now defunct pitbull forum.

The old south african flag did not just represent apartheid and opression. I dont know where people get that? Youre only seeing the negative in it.

Take a look at the old flag.... What do you see on the left? The old Union Jack....(From the British) They opressed the 'afrikaners' or dutch setllers as well.

"The Anglo-Boer war (1899-1902), in which the British brutally vanquished the Afrikaners"

"Huge numbers of Afrikaner women and children starved to death in concentration camps; the survivors were typically unable to start over in their old rural occupations and drifted to unemployment in towns."

Yet we keep it in our old flag... cause its part of our history and heritage.

The new flag doesnt mean anything to me.

I ride my bike, all the kids ride their bikes actually the kids ride scramblers and quad bikes all over my area. Where do you live???

Where I live, I have seen black kids on their bikes, but not white kids. So that is a freedom taken away by the current government. It is our choice to keep the kids indoors, to play it safe, rather than risking your child's life by allowing him to go outside and ride his bike in the neighborhood.

A moment to feel proud of what it represents? Security, stability, patriotism, something I have not felt for 16 years?

Yet they free for 16 years... should they now respect something that ruined their past?

Ok let me ask you guys a question and answer it truth fully

100% of the White people under the old flag would at that stage in history leave their loved 1's @ home to go and defend their country and their flag.

Any 1 here that is pre-paired to it today for our new country and the new flag ?

Then its you making it a prison for your kids, not the new flag or government.

The new flag doesn't mean anything to me.

Yes, my great grandmother, lived to the age of 101, had to watch 9 of her siblings die, she was the 10th and only survivor of a concentration camp. Her parents and other relatives were also killed. She used to get very upset when she heard I was in an English school, her husband was murdered by a black man, she was a racist of caliber, she hated the British more though and didn't mind too much that my school was 95% black.

I think I made up my mind, the old flag represents the good and the bad, both should be remembered.
The flag should never be banned, and should still be displayed proudly, but alongside the new flag (which doesn't mean anything to me, but does to some people).

The thing is then one had to go somewhere far away from home to defend your family and your stuff - now it happens in your own home. The "Border" was far away - now it's the wall of my house. Sad.

Thanks to Mr Madiba himself!;)

Of course, it doesn't. You wouldn't allow it to mean a thing to you. You do not want to move forward and embrace some real change. You want things to change but still remain the same, them you and your elk will be happy. However, life doesn't work that way.

That flag is a bad bad symbol and should be banned. Those who yearn for the good old day's of priviledge should raise it at the remotest of farms in the company of Roodt and Terreblanche.

Personally, I think this ubuntu of the darkies has prevented them from doing the right thing and banning that thing as welll as making racism an offence one can go to jail or prison for, let them become wifes for some really bad okes.:D

I'm not sure what you meant, but as far as I can determine, your past was not ruined by the previous government, I'm sure your father and certainly your grandfather suffered, but today you reap the benefits of a country which was under the rule of the 'colonists' the longest in Africa, which is also the most developed with the best prospects. If you ever manage to go to a country like Zambia, Uganda or Kenya, you will see what I mean by your privileged standing. You have food and water today, Kenya, does not. I'm sure your grandparents would be proud of what you have accomplished today, even though you are standing on their shoulders and that of the previous government.

Then its you making it a prison for your kids, not the new flag or government.

I pay taxes to the government, so the Police can keep me safe, they have failed. The only party to blame is the government, as at 1994 it was perfectly safe in affluent neighborhoods. I don't even allow my 20 year old girlfriend to walk to my house, I walk to hers, and walk back to mine, it is over 2km in total. Just to ensure her safety.

I fail to see what they would gain.

I had public schooling with Black kids all of my school days. That was since 1987 - 1998. I went to school with our domestic's son. O and BTW this was in Pretoria. We had the same education and they where actually pre-paired to learn. In Afrikaans. He's today a qualified Electrical Engineer and he's mother doesn't work for us no more. She still comes and visits and so does he.

He was happy and we still talk about the old times and fun we had. The majority of Black people where stubborn and that is why they haven't reached anything in their lives. Blaming your circumstances for what you have not reached or accomplished is your own fault and yours alone. Stop blaming apartheid cos that is no excuse

As for the other forum.... Sorry m8

I love my dogs but no dog forum for me thanx ;)

The good and bad should both be remembered. Thew new flag and guavamint still has a far way to go, before it will inspire the same patriotism the old one brings to mind.

The only people that has never suffered in this country are those of British descent. The Afrikaner suffered - but this is brushed away as nothing by the new governers of this country. The right thing should be for all to accept one-another as fellow martyrs - but unfortunately everyone wants to make his/her own suffering seem worse than those before them.

You see...that is exactly where you have it wrong in this discussion my friend.

You speak of my parents and your parents. You forget about you and me!!! Just to remind you... I don't have ample employment opportunity because of reverse racism and reverse apartheid - they call this Employment equity these days. My parents had access to all of the things you mentioned, not me.

Maybe your parents didn't have access to a lot of things, but the fact of the matter is, that you now have more privilages than my parents had!! Stop living in the history in live today!!!!!! This goverment is nothing better that the pervious - in fact they are worse!!

Nothing you say now will change the fact that what happend did infact happen. But what you say now, may infact change what might have happend tomorrow. So stop with this and rather stand together and try to better tomorrow - not for yourself or you brother, but for your kids and my kids - whether they are black, white, indian, chinese, japanese, vietnamese, mexican, british or what ever...

I had to highlight the indian community...think for a second. Have your ever heard the indian people complain about the previous goverment? No!!! Its only the black man that complain about it...(no pun intended). So, follow their example and execpt the fact and use it to correct tomorrow...

2. I gained nothing from appartheid to this day.

Did you go to school in south africa during the apartheid years? The national party allocated educational budget according to the following rules. R100 per white child, R50 per indian child, R25 per "other races" and R10 per black child. Think about that and then say again you gained nothing. But that is a discussion for another day.

As for the ban and burn it brigade I can only shake my head. I am white and will always be white. If it reminds you of a past regime and your only solution is ban and burn I see a dark future for the country.

Apartheid was a big advantage to the whites, even I benefited from it. However, My great grandfather, had nothing after the camps, my grandfather, worked so hard his knees are gone. He woke at 4 in the morning, worked on a farm as child, went to school, came home and worked. He worked on the railways till the day he retired, alongside black people, he worked harder than they did, even though he was assured of promotion over the black men. My dad worked very hard also, studied through a student loan and advanced himself. I also studied through a student loan, I went to the same school as 900 other black students, we came to the same varsity but I am the only one which graduated.

There are many excuses, but they do not hold water, if you really want a degree, you could have had one if you are under the age of 23, if you worked hard. I did not even have schooling from grade 4 to grade 9, still I manged. If you were in a bad school, it was better than none.

Who said anything about not moving forward or not embracing change? I just find the changing of our flag, and every street name, building and logo in sight ridiculous. Whether it represents good or bad, afrikaans or not, its being changed.

Jan Smuts, ok no wait, JHB international, ok no wait, O Thambo...

Tomorrow goverment gets bored again, and changes the flag to a smiley face, and thats supposed to mean something to me?
