Joint media statement issued on behalf of Traffic Freeflow and OUTsurance

Thursday, 23 August 2018 - Traffic Freeflow (Pty) Ltd (TFF)and OUTsurance are deeply disappointed to learn of the termination of TFF’s contract with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) for the provision of pointsmen services to the City.

Colleen Bekker, the founder of Traffic Freeflow and the person who first approached the City with the proposal to supply privately sponsored traffic pointsmen commented “It’s a very sad day for me personally, all of the staff of Traffic Freeflow, our 36 sponsors and in particular the motorists of Johannesburg, who have come to depend on the stellar service the pointsmen have offered in getting them through sticky traffic every morning and afternoon for the past 13 years.”

I see a huge fark up in the traffic on Monday 3rd.

180+ jobs gone.

Viva DA Viva. Yay for the DA.

Not.

Do remember that the ANC often were "we're not renewing" "ok, we'll renew"

Personally I don't see the need for a tender being required. It is free in so far as outsurance, a few others and really all their clients pay for the service, not COJ nor JMPD...

Not 100% accurate.

JMPD have recruited something like 1500 new officers in the last year - the function will be performed by JMPD going forward (as it should be).
I'd have liked to see JMPD absorbing the staff from the pointsmen process though, that would have been a win all round.

They should really have been able to sort out traffic in those 13 years. Can't depend on that many points men for 13 years. They were just treating a symptom. 13 years and they could sort out the maintenance and find a solution for vandalism of lights?

Another excuse for the DA to hike rates by 50% next year to pay for additional pointsmen.
Is this defensible by the DA apologists?

Well, it takes a while to fix things left in shambles for 22 years, in just 2 years.

Should never have existed to begin with... we already pay salaries to people who should be doing it

Oh boy another f-up to be followed by renewal after seeing they are incapable of doing their jobs.

Pretty sure they would have to have adsorbed these staff - as the non-renewal may constitute a transfer under section 197 of the LRA

So they're suddenly going to put all 1500 at critical points on Monday? Pulease.

The press release from the mayor's office states they have employed 180 traffic wardens to replace the outsurance folks. Therefore the 1500 have zilch to do with this.

The logistics of getting these traffic wardens to the relevant locations is going to prove too much for JMPD, realistically speaking 90%+ of them are useless for anything other than checking vehicle/driver licenses & soliciting bribes.
JMPD is a revenue generating department, not a policing department.

Agreed. Except we as ratepayers never paid a cent towards this project, it was 100% funded by corporates with Outsurance being the instigator & largest sponsor AFAIK.

I hope so, it would be utterly tragic to see these trained & skilled people be left jobless. With 8 days notice. Awful.

The JMPD is compoletely useless. Just look at how over the last 20 years rule breaking on the roads have skyrocketed with absolutely zero action from JMPD. My 7 year old daughter could manage that department better than the current leadership. I have no idea where the cops have all disappeared to but I am guessing its taking naps and movies as you never see them on the roads anymore, and if you do they never seem to pull anyone over. Other than the very occasional road block I have no idea what they even do.

A sad day for JHB. Bad form DA.

Going to be interesting to see how JMpeeD cope with locating their new 180 traffic wardens and keep the traffic flowing. Sad the Outsurance pointsmen are real stars and I hope they are properly taken care of, hopefully absorbed into JmpeeD.
Also what about the transport to get the pointsmen to their locations. If the Metro can't even maintain their Fire Truck with over 50% not operational as reported a week ago, we are in for tough times in the traffic.
The Metro stuffed up the Pothole brigade that also did a fantastic job a few years ago and wherever you go there are potholes, so I don't expect this to be any different.

JMPD do on-the-job training for the newbies in the CBD, on my route to work. I hate those days, as traffic is 10 times worse than if a set of traffic lights were out.

1500 more trees need planting so this lot can sit under them and watch the chaos.

So, after a public outcry the contract has been extended:

Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba has announced that 186 OUTsurance pointsmen will be reinstated, after their contract came to an end earlier this month.

Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba announced on Tuesday on David O’Sullivan’s show on KAYA FM that the OUTsurance pointsmen project contract will, in fact, be extended.
This comes after a massive public outcry that followed the August announcement that the pointsmen contract had come to an end.
