Hello guys,

Have searched around here and a few other sites, but I thought I would ask those in the know :)

I am looking for a decent pair of over ear headphones. To simplify, these are the basics:

  • Will be used primarily at home for music and movies
  • Large variety of music, but I would prefer something that is not too bass heavy.
  • Occasional outdoor use
  • Will be used on PC, iPad and Galaxy S2 / Nexus 4
  • Budget of R1.5k - R2k

I have seen the Sennheiser HD 558's mentioned previously, would you guys still recommend these?

Looking on the Sennheiser site, they have the HD 428's which cost a little under R1k excluding shipping. Would anyone recommend these?

Oh- and considering the rather feeble DAC's on mobile phones, I will also look at getting a Fiio E5 along with the headphones.

EDIT: I have seen quite a few good reviews of the HD 201 series. Perhaps these might be better suited for me? Can anyone give feedback on them?

Thanks guys!

Only three headphones I use are Senn HD25s (DJing), Technics RP DJ1200s (DJing) and Pioneer SE A1000s (studio work). Pioneers have better overall sound reproduction than the Senns and Technics...

Thanks for the feedback.

The HD 25s look like serious pieces of kit, but they might be overkill for me. Will consider them though...

Not finding out much on the Pioneers, only the SE A1000 pops up in Google.

Go to a music store and test them out out first. Don't just buy on their recommendation and impulse though - check here first before making a purchase...

Sennheiser HD 203. It's what I have been using for years. Good quality, reasonably hardy and not at all expensive. Music quality is good.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

Have come across the Sennheiser HD 518's. These look pretty impressive.

Based on a plethora of reviews, the HD 201 seems to need an amp at the least, to give it decent sounding music. So I'll probably remove it for consideration. Will keep the HD 203's in mind.

And no thanks re the Beats. Too much bass for me, great headphones nonetheless...
