Ok so i want to overclock my PC without damaging it. Is it worth overclocking? I play CoD4, TF2 and Crysis and want to get a faster performance from my PC.

My specs are:

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
E4500 @ 2.20GHz
2 GB of Ram
Nvidia 8600 GT
Windows XP 32 Bit
Air Cooling Fans

Now is over clocking safe on such a PC? Also which programs must i use to overclocking, where can I get them, etc? Also any other useful tips i might need?

Don't over clock your PC, its cache will work slower and will damage the pc harddrive.

huh me thinks someone does not know what they are talking about :)

Will prob be better to upgrade your gpu to improve performance.

Just google overclocking and your mobo/cpu name and you will find plenty plenty ocing guides (it is how i learnt and i now overclock everything)

Excuse me?

Overclocking the CPU is quite easy, simply raise the FSB (Front Side Bus) of your motherboard. Overclocking the GPU is a bit more tricky, download something like RivaTuner. Visit the Hardware and Software FAQ for overclocking links.

If u check the temps and dont consider increasing cpu voltage then overclocking is as safe as switching a pc on :)

For cpu: bios, if bios doesnt support then use a software called clockgen. If that still dont work then BSEL modding :D My fav...

For gpu: rivatune or ati tool or coolbit

You could get your gpu core to GTS speeds easy though I dont know how much performace gain you'd get.

And for ram timing makes a nice little difference too...for me at least :)

The only advice anyone can give you is, do it in small steps and watch your temperature.

Good luck! :D

ps. why would cache work slower when cpu is overclocked????:confused:

are you willing to bet some hard cash on that?

you did not state what motherboard you have . . . thats the most important part when it comes to overclocking.
if you have an intel board then you might as well forget about it.

I overclock EVERYTHING and its always a whole lot faster than stock so Im not sure where they whole thing about slowing cache etc etc down comes from.
Fubar is right on the money though, some boards dont support much in terms of overclocking and the genuine intel stuff doesnt support it at all. You would need software for one of those and thats a waste of time.

a bad overclock can corrupt data on your drive, but it cannot damage the drive itself.

it happens when memory timings are incorrect

Upgrade ur GPU... Theres no need to overclock pc.

Core 2 Duo Processors are very powerful and they dont need to be overclocked.

Get a good graphics card like a geforce 9800gt or Raedon 4850. They sell for around R1500 to R2000

I did twice and the hard-drives burned down....
I had an intel board

well you cannot overclock with an intel board.

did you do your homework before attempting to oc your pc? i think not

take the failed attempts as experience well earned and try again ;)

Yes of course try overclocking - it's a lot of fun for one thing. If your mobo supports it, try a simple BSEL mod for a free stable overclock, I'm going to give it a try soon.
