Overhauling Telkom

If regulatory constraints don't stand in its way, Telkom's IP TV offering could be available in SA as early as mid-2007.

And if regulatory contraints don't stand in anybody's way, a number of companies could be offering a number of similar services, and much more, by mid-2007.

However, Molotsane used the occasion to take a thinly veiled dig at municipalities that were now encroaching on Telkom's dominance in its traditional fixed line domain. "They should stick to delivery of social services and leave the telecoms business to us."

Yes, well when Telkom tried to carry out their social service mandate the result was utterly atrocious. Perhaps the municipalities wouldn't have to interfere if TelkomApartheid didn't exist.

Problem is my dear (or should that be very.... dear, no wait I have a better idea, make it down right expensive) Tel-con - You have failed in your mandate to provide services, of the 2.8 million you were suppose to connect in return for your monopoly, most have long fallen away, if they ever were connected in the first place

It reminds me of the time Many, many years ago, the post office (grand daddy of Tel-Con) ran a full page ad in the Sundaytimes on why you should keep your Telex machine. This was because they were going back to the post office in truck loads because of fax machines. Times change, adapt or die - but as Bob Dylan said

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'

You brought tears to my eyes! Beautifully said!

Read: "They should leave the business of raping South Africa to Telkom and the ANC (Pty Ltd)...."

Flipping idiot. Basic telephony and internet access is a social service and a basic need in a new economy.....

I hate telkom, They are spending so much money, and when competition finally comes out, they will be able to provide us with a really nice deal, so the majority will go with telkom. And every1 will forget how long they bled the economy for.........................................
So the bastards will keep prices high until they have to lower them.

Haha - I look forward to a world were telecoms are just a basic utility like the sewage system. I think Telkom executives will feel quite at home with the sewage industry... but wait! They might restrict our toilet breaks!

The fact is that municipalities can probably provide the service for their residents for free and most probably still save on their phone bill!

I must say I rest easy at night knowing that Telkom executives are probably going straight to hell anyway :-)

Really - why is there a need for USALs then muppet?

Social implies Communication

What our dear minister has forgotton is that communcation forms the backbone of any social service. Look up the dictionary definition, minister!

We humans are social animals, and we communicate in order to interact. No communication ... no interaction ... no social structure.

The reasons municiapilites are taking over telecoms is because they ARE provideing a social service ... communication.

Maybe the government should LEARN from the municipalities, instead of trying to control them.

Can you imagine... they'd come up with an arbitrary amount of matter which you could put intio the system, and then require you to get another toilet contract to use any more... the sewage system would be hopelessly underutilised while executives rush to claim that it is being 'responsibly allocated' and the reports of blockages and people being cut off from the sewage lines are completely false. In the meantime, a new class of waste transporters would spring up, manually transporting the waste by truck without the need for a sewage line (approximately 3 months for installation) into your home...

Because lord knows they've been doing it so well...

Hahaha. Nice one. Couldn't have said it better myself. :D

Telkom's only saving grace is ICASA and DoC. If we had a free and open telecom's market, and not these govt institutions protecting their cash-cow, Telkom would die very quickly. Only in SA can we have the highest telecoms prices in the world and the ICASA chief whip turn around and say there's no evidence prices are high....!!!

IMO, the municipalities are the only competition at this stage and Telkom is already throwing it's toys (just look at the Knysna saga)..... what are they going to do when maybe one day we will have someone in power "for the people" of this country that actually care about their people and basic services like telecoms....

 really...I haven't noticed any improvements...I guess I'm just unlucky to be stuck using a tiny portion of the other 50% that is still old and outdated...silly me for expecting better from a semi-privatised de facto fixed line monopoly :(.
 and Telkodemonopolies, as SA's de facto fixed line monopoly, has how many fixed lines in SA? - ~4 million fixed lines in a country with at least 20 million adult consumers...

Yeah right whatever you say Sick Puppy Moletsane - you're doing so well milking those <~4 million fixed line customers - the mark of a really successful fixed line telecoms company is refusing to provide a service to the majority of consumers, well done, you should get an award as the worst fixed line telecoms company in the known universes...

I recon Papi just feels the fool because the municipalities which are known for their poor service delivery (and by association should be doing a equally poor job in these telecom pursuits) are STILL doing a better job than Telkom. Imagine that, Papi’s nightmare, “our cr*p municipalities are better at telecoms than Telkom”
