Hi Guys

i have an HP Envy DV6 i7 with a Nvidia GEFORCE 630M 2GB, and its overheating to a point where you can hardly touch it. Any ideas, solutions or tips to get it to cool down? No warranty, so basically have to either get it to a technician or find ways to cool it down. Strange thing is that its very hot, but hasnt caused switching off etc

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

If the fans are still working, open up the laptop and clean the dust from the fans with a little brush
Get a notebook stand for better ventilation
Check for unnessary programs running in the background and which programs chew up the CPU. Set them to not run on startup.

will have a look thanks.. I can still hear the fans, they are not loud though, so thats either a good thing or im hoping its not a sign its dying

Have an M6 and a Probook 4530 - both HP same issues.

Speedfan doesnt work on these machines for whatever reason.

Have tried switching coolsense on and off - no help.
Have cleaned the fans, re thermal-ed a few times - best bet was a cooling pad underneath.
In fact, I have a new fan on its way to me for the Probook to try to cool the machine down.
At best, in the BIOS you can opt for fan always on.

Be keen to see if you find a solution though.

Over time dust and dirt will clog up the fans causing it to spin slower causing the laptop to overheat. At least it is still turning.

Read your laptops manual how to open the laptop so you can get access to the fans. Be careful of static electricity as well.

Ill have a look at all the options here... If i have to go the replacing fan then so be it, but will see what it looks like in terms of dust etc

My dv6 did the same thing massive heat build up then got the generic black screen warning of fan failure, don't remember the code sorry.
Followed a teardown clip on YouTube cleaned the fan and rethermal pasted the cooling system.
Running without issues for 48 hours now with no overheating or reboots.
Good luck with yours

I concur with what others have said - open up and clean out ALL dust.

Thanks.. ill see if i can first clean out the dust and then have a look, before im going to apply the thermal paste. I gather it is dust or something, because if i do heavy intensive things or programmes, it heats up badly.

The thermal paste in mine had degraded to looking like baby powder. When opening dv6 it's a full teardown to access the fan. Thermal paste will cost you R60 it's worth doing it when it's open

Thanks... Hopefully i dont accidentally buy toothpaste lol

Okay so who is in Cape Town CBD who does these things for a living and who can help me out. I looked at that video, and damn, thats pretty hard for a noob like me lol

If its overheating to the point where you can hardly touch it, more than like the cpu has been damaged by now.

I have the same issue with an older Asus ROG laptop, will work now for about an hour and then shuts down from over heating...its been cleaned, new thermal paste applied but it looks like the cpu must have been deep fried a tad so that will have to be replaced, can't be bothered so it just sits as a pretty dust gatherer at the moment.
