Thursday morning: I am getting poor HSPDA speeds to local sites, but still fine for me. (>100 kbps)

But speeds to overseas sites are averaging <10 kbps, frequently dropping to below 100 bytes per second sustained. Gmail wanted to switch to Basic mode. A refresh of my inbox (just one page of text) takes 2 minutes.

The BBC home page took a minute to load.

Larger overseas web pages never complete loading (within 5 minutes).

Is everybody experincing this?

correction: dropping to below 100 BITS per second sustained

// I am experiencing similar conditions on Int sites. Crawling.
// Local seems to be okay

Now even bbc.co.uk homepage is not loading. Is anybody getting overseas bandwidth?

I'm getting 963/319 to New York on speedtest.net.

Local (speed.vodacom.co.za) is 1212/349.

You're in Simons Town at the moment? I've asked the guys to check for a problem on the town side of the network. Might be that you and stix are affected by the same problem.

Hi

I am currently sitting in Paris looking at the Eiffel Tower waiting for Gmail to open. Even in France on the Orange Wifi network it is not responding. Perhaps something is happening in the world or a DNS server is not functioning correctly.

but bbc.co.uk still slow

Just got confirmation that there are SAIX lines down in Cape Town, affecting international browsing for the Western Cape.

I think it might be going up and down resulting in very good (like mine) and very bad speeds being reported.

near Simons Town, Connected to Fish Hoek. Surely there is no problem that could affect just the overseas bandwith of certain users? That would make me nervous, it would mean that Vodacom could engage in a sort of overseas bandwith load shedding, throttling Cape Town (say) in favour of Hermanus, where the CEO has a holiday house...

Actually his holiday house is closer to Mosselbay, so they'll get the best throughput! :)

No, I think we're seeing spurious test results, probably due to work being done to restore it.

That's why I suspeced a problem more local to you; you got low throughputs, yet I got much better results (1.3M to Europe is not shabby!!)
