overseas vacation. budget ?

curious for those who have been overseas what do you normally spend on the whole thing more or less.

2x adults, about 7 nights stay in preferably a BB place. target is sweden.

lol. well flights i checked was around 15K-ish and then the cheapest 3 star according to brittish airways raking in at 12K.

that's like 27K. excluding spending and traveling around the place.
 
I recommend staying 2 weeks. One week is a bit short for flying to Sweden.
 
I want to do an overseas trip this year, either Thialand, Greece or India.

Budget wil be about R30 000 for two adults, but you need emergency money, going to make sure that the credit card is clear just in case

I'm toying with the idea of Thailand. I missed out on a trip last year around April-May ... 7 night stay incl. flights and accom for R15k. So I'm keen.

Definitely consider 2 weeks - seeing as it costs a lot to get you there, you might as well make the most of it.

Also keep in mind where you'd want to be. Not all european countries are small. I've only been to the Southern Lakes in Sweden, but we took a road trip from Germany - via Denmark - to get there, so it depends on what you're keen to see.

R27k is the same as R40 by the time you're done.

I've done several business trips in the past few years and I'd say R20k person is average.
 
i see. i'ts almost like buying a little car to go there ;).
 
Some countries, like Germany, have a requirement when you apply for a visa on how much money you must have per person per day (R800 per day per person with free accommodation or paid hotel. Source (pdf)). If Sweden have something similar it might help to give a minimum of what should be needed.

Various websites e.g. Travelocity.com have user-written reviews of hotels.

On a trip to Amsterdam I found a website that listed the hotels in Amsterdam. I sorted the list in lowest-to-highest [daily rates] sequence, then read the Travelocity reviews for each hotel.

Around the tenth hotel I found a two-star in central Amsterdam with excellent reviews. The cost was less than R600/night b&b. Granted it took two or three hours browsing, but I saved a fortune.

I then repeated the process for Paris.

My final bill for the trip (less international airfare) was less than a trip to Cape Town :)
 
Is it cheaper to do all the leg work yourself, searching for flights and accommodation and what not, than to buy a package holiday from a travel agent?

+1 did this for Thailand. Stayed in nothing less than 4 star hotels and it was so much cheaper doing it from Thailand.

Not always. It al depends on when you start to plan everything. Travel agents are sometimes cheaper, as they get bulk discounts. In the end it will depend on what you want to do, and if you don´t mind being bound by what the travel agent plans. Sometimes their planning doesn´t match your ideas perfectly.

Not always Depends where you are headed. For certain popular South African overseas holidays like Thailand, Bali, Mauritius, Seychelles, etc. The Package Companies often cannot be beat because they buy block seats on the airlines and have preferential rates with the accommodations in their lines (or in cases like Beachcomber, they own their own). Then again it's not just air and hotel, it is taxes, ground transfers, activities, drinks and meals - either half board, B&B, or full board, or All inclusive. But there are exceptions to every rule...especially if you go the DIY self catering option which often works out cheaper (and riskier)

I want to go to Thailand (Bangkok and Koh samui or Phuket) and wherever else my budget can take me :D

Was looking at flights, and they all pretty pricey, did you book hotels before you got there, or did you just arrive and start looking?
