I'm actually getting the vibe that somehow "all cars" are equal on the road message from the OP.
i.e. don't judge me cause I have a small car...

... less jealousy and more Crab bucket as well.

The guy didn't complain about my driving he said my car is small and ask do I think I can race with him.

As much as we would like to dismiss OP, what the guy said to him is not nice and many of us would not be please if it was directed at us, I don't understand where the jealousy bit is coming from?

They should both be shot. They placed a lot of lives at risk. The truck on the left should have slowed down upon seeing the dangerous situation the moron on the right created.

My BMW motorcycle is doing about 134km/h on the clocks at a GPS 120km/h.

VW Golf is about 129km/h with a verified 120km/h.

VW must be cheating.

What mods have you done to the bike and the car? Have you changed the tyres away from those recommended by the supplier? Different profiles? Different diameters?


My Nissan Navara as issued in SA with Goodyear Wranglers, under read on the speedo when compared to a GPS. Then I checked Nissan international and found out what profile of tyre was used when the speedo was calibrated. On a tyre change I insisted on the correct profiles and now the speedo reading and the GPS are within 1% of each other .......

So you gauge cars but he is driving within speed limit which is required.

The guy who was behind me and later over take me when we got to the garage (filling station) he came to me and told me my car is to small. The is no way he was going to allow me to be in front of him. Which made me ask do we gauge cars on the road when we over take.

There are many drivers that suffer stupidity.

Whether I drive the little hatchback or the big sedan I drive speed limit where possible.

When I am driving the big car people seldom attempt to cut me off when they enter the rd I am driving on. BUT if I drive the little hatchback I get cut off multiple times a day. And 90% of the time when that happens there is either no can behind me or the nearest approaching car is FAR away still.

Surely they could have waited another 30seconds instead of attempting to kill me and/or themselves...

So I won't drive the hatch when out at night.

I've never had that experience, and I own a small mini hatch and a "large" sedan. Where are you from, Johannesburg I assume? Because all the GP cars I see in Cape Town can't drive properly if their life depended on it.

Good evening everyone I would like to ask something if a car in front of you is going fast (normal speed that is required) why do you feel the need to over take that car.

Some guy yesterday said something to me that is why I started this thread. I will tell you guys after I hear the reasons for over taking.

Back to OPs question.

These are the reasons I overtake.

(1) I drive a fairly powerful 4 x4, that is easily able to maintain a constant speed up and downhill and with the speed control on to boot. So If am set to cruise at 120 km/hr (or whatever speed I choose less than that) and I gain on a slower moving vehicle that I can easily overtake by accelerating to 10 km/hr faster, then I overtake when safe to do so. I know I can put distance between me and the slower moving vehicle in a relatively short period after that.

(2) IF I can see that the other vehicle is moving almost at the same speed as I am and I am gaining slowly, and cannot overtake him easily by accelerating by another 10 km/hr, I will slow down to his speed and follow him with a gap of at least 10seconds. I will then wait until there is a safe long stretch to pass him if he shows any signs of not maintaining his speed at a constant rate.

(3) The other reason for overtaking is to break up a convoy of vehicles . Convoys are a bad thing and should be avoided.

Is it a safe conclusion to make that the guy on the left accelerated hence the other could not overtake? or what exactly did he do wrong?

Well the fact that he maintained the obvious dangerous situation for a pissing contest for many minutes.

At any time he could have just dropped the throttle at let him pass, fully knowing he is being a ****.

Instead he chose to also be a ****...which evidenced by this thread and the many others seems to be the real problem on our roads.

Both 100% to spec and therefore completely stock.

On the motorcycle front this is actually something that comes up often on the BMW motorcycle forums as they all over-read hectically.

So it's most definitely a factory standard thing and not an individual bike thing.

Had similar experiences.

When I drove an Audi A6 for a while even if I were the very last to stop at a 4-way stop I would often be told to go first.

Same when approaching from behind cars would move out of the way, but in other cars wouldn't experience this.


Similar thing with the bike, but that might be the DRL's being more visible but I'll often see other bikes being stuck behind a car but the moment I show up they suddenly make a plan. Could also be that they think the big fat BMW is a cop shop bike maybe.

Did a round trip to Kroonstad last thursday. The amount of times I saw this happening on an uphill was astounding.
Most of them on the dual overtaking lanes but yes... the truck drivers have no sense of how long it really takes them to overtake.

The N1 South, just after Kroonstad, is a death trap. I refuse to drive there at night anymore. People constantly overtake on blind rises.

The reason for the guy to over take me is because my car is tiny and he wouldn't allow a small car to be in front of him. I was shocked this guy has a nerve. It's not like I was driving like a granny.

Well when I was driving a tazz I also had the same stuff. Even once had metro cop tell me to get out the fast lane even though I was doing 120 on a mostly empty road.

Then I upgraded to a Honda sedan and had people giving way for me.

I think it makes sense that smaller cars should stay out the fast lane as they have less power on tap for overtaking.

What were you doing in the overtaking lane on an almost empty road? Especially with a tazz that can barely get close to the legal limit when going up a hill.

But yes, smaller cars should treat the right hand lane as one used strictly for overtaking only because of what you say. The power is just not available to accelerate to get out of the way or use the lane effectively.

Of course this does not apply to the high peak hours when everyone is crawling along anyway.

I disagree. Why do you say this?

Well cars in convoys tend to follow each other too closely with insufficient gaps in between vehicles. This encourages crazy behaviour out of the " Must-be-in-front" brigade with passing vehicles taking on long lines of vehicles. So I do not join convoys if I can help it. I also do not allow a convoy to form behind me either. I will pull over and allow following vehicle to pass, just to get rid of him behind me.

I get past a convoy if it is moving 20-30 km/hr below the speed limit, one vehicle at a time. I rarely pass a convoy in one shot.

what I do not understand is, why when drivers know that passing lanes come up at regular intervals, They still insist on passing vehicles in between. This is particularly true of the section of the N1 South after Kroonstad referred to in another post.

It is just as easy to wait for a passing lane and then get overtake vehicles that may be moving slower than you are.

It's a very sunny day in Rustenburg VW Golf driver decide to overtake at up normal speed without observing oncoming cars. If I didn't swerve to make a space he/she was going to crash into me.
