I finally got my adsl line after two months and a bit of waiting. I'm subscribed to SAOL (10GB Dual account).

Now being new to this and all the first thing that i did was start up Azureus. I know that the P2P ports are shaped and all, but one thing I (stupidly i admit) didn't realise is that uploading contributes to your cap usage. Now i'm a bit hesitant to start Azureus up again, beceuse my cap will be used in no time at all.

Can someone please recommend a solution?

Looking for either a torrent client that allows you to select not to upload (chances) or another p2p client where uploading can at least be restricted.

What do you guys use?

Oh yes, and hi to all.

Everything that you download is coming off someone elses cap, through them uploading to you... So download as much as you upload, that is fair to the community. If everyone restricted their uploading, there would be nothing for you to download...

Get 2x 2GB IS accounts @ like R160 each = R320. gives you 4gb Int, and 56Gb Local BW. which is pretty fair, if you on 384k or lower, 56Gb is more than enough for you. If you on 512k or 1mb, then 56Gb is ok, but maybe buy a 3rd 2GB IS account so you have 94Gb local per month which is enough, even on 512K. even with 3x 2Gb accs @ R450 p/m you still paying less than ur 10Gb SAOL, and getting 6Gb int / 84Gb local.

Pm me, if u need help with p2p

If you dont want to do your bit and upload then consider subscribing to IS and taking advantage of their newsgroups. Openweb is one of the better known IS providers and has a fairly solid rep on the forum.

Its a pity its come to it but the IS local cap is going to have a detrimental effect on local torrent communities at least in the short term.

Woah, what exactly does this mean. The reason why i cancelled my iBurst subs was that i couldn't P2P.

Please explain this 'hardcap', 'IS local cap' thing to me.

Thanx.

This can probably explain better than I can. http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=41194

Essentially IS has decided to implement the 30gb cap on local traffic where by after you exceed your cap you'll need to buy another account. The cap has always been there but they havent utilized it until now.

Thanx, understood. Would u recommend i go through IS or someone smaller like Nukecap for P2P?

Thats a tough call - for local torrents then IS is probably still the best way to go - and dont discount the enormous amount of content available on their news servers. It might be daunting at first but there are plenty of ppl who are willing to point you in the right direction (not me though - I dont have an IS account - yet).

For international torrents then you'll have to ask around. There are also international usenet news servers like the one I use - easynews.

yeah, if u are going to be using p2p a lot then u cant beat IS's 30 gig local right now, despite the new capping policy they have implemented. I have an account with openweb. They would get my vote :)

@torn, i see your point.

What sort of stuff is available via the news groups?

Apolopies for still being very dimwitted when it comes to this, but say i had to get the two IS accounts.

Firstly:
Do the two caps automatically join, or would i have to relogin using the other account?

Secondly:
Once the int cap is used, can i still use p2p using the local cap?

And i'm sure there are many more questions i'll need to ask.

Caps do not join. treated as separate accounts AFAIK.

once the international is used you can go wild using p2p for local purposes( well as well as u can get with 30 gigs...)

if 60Gb is enough for you.

Get:

2x 2GB accounts @ +- R320 for both. Gives you 60gb's

Use them for local p2p as much as you can. forget about any caps or anything.

Get 1x 1gb account @ +- R70 which you just use for int browsing when you need to. (doesnt come with extra 30gb, when the 1gb is gone, its gone)

So then you can dl p2p all month and still be able to browse it.

Total = R400 p/m cheaper than 10GB acc normaly, you get 60GB

Get then routing program(find it somewhere on myadsl) which lets you use 2 accounts at the same time, as routes local traffic through 1 account, and int traffic through another account, so you dont even need to change connections ever....

That sounds decent. can someone please point me to some local servers so i can check them out?

Best you dont ask. They're mostly by invitation only and many prefer to avoid any unnecessary publicity.

p2p is so last Tuesday... :)

If you have an IS account just use their news server for all your needs... you'll never need to torrent or whatever again.
