Hi guys.

Trying to troubleshoot this.

I am getting packet loss on the 8 or 9 hop.

This is affecting my VoIP quality.

ISP says ask Telkom. Telkom says line looks fine.

Where could the trouble be?

I have attached a mtr report.

Get a new ISP it looks like the MTN network might have some peering issues. Good luck in getting that resolved.

You have loss on the 3rd hop already, this will affect it down range. Is this ADSL? If so I would say the link out from the exchange is faulty, or the exchange could be congested. Let the MTR run for more than 9 runs maybe about 50, will be more concrete. Also try different times. Early morning, morning, afternoon, evening, later at night. Did you test with a LAN cable or are you doing this over wifi? Test both. Do they give the same or different result?

Yes Adsl.
Did in on LAN cable.

Will try diff times and see.

What do I tell Telkom when they call for the fault report?

But my other Mtn network account with another ISP in a different location is fine

Tell them the address you are getting loss on, they will most likely not know what you are on about, ask to speak to a transmission technician. And insist on the fault being reported

If you get different results at different times, eg. if it is better early and late times, it is definitely congestion on the exchange. If it is all the time there is some thing wrong with the exchanges connection to the outside world.

Thanks

Could it be the router?

Been having weird problems with it.

Hi There,
If it was your router then the Mtr would have loss at the first hop would it not?
So it is back to getting Telkom to look deeper into the problem once you have confirmed that it is not at random times in the day.
If it is random then the exchange is congested.
Once the drop there is sorted then you can look at your 8-9 hops.

Tim

Hi

Did all the troubleshooting and it seems its definitely on Telkom side.

Got a call from an "expert" based in Cape Town and he said he will do two things.

1. Transfer my line to another port
2. If above fails to resolve the problem then he will get the guys to replace the copper to the exchange?

He further went on to say that the exchange is definitely NOT congested.

Well done to Telkom on trying to resolve this!
