Okay, so I'm struggling a bit to fix a mate's PC. Both Internet Explorer and Firefox return "Page cannot be displayed errors".

The router has successfully connected to/synced with the web (as I can see from the diagnostics/status). The PC can see the router fine through the ethernet. I can ping the loopback. I can't ping any websites tho.

I'm using Windows XP and it's a freshly installed PC. I had a few driver hiccups and incorrect drivers installed, but the correct ones are now installed.

Any assistance would greatly be appreciated.

Make sure that in the browser settings "never dial a connection" is on. Also make sure that the default gateway is correct. It should be able to auto assign this, but just check. Set yourself a static IP and manually put the default gateway in, which will be the routers IP and see if that works. I think this is what I did the last time I had this issue.

And manually set the DNS server to the routers address. If you using a mega 105 with XP SP3 you will need to do this.

Thanks for the replies guys. None of those worked unfortunately - I think the initial driver (a nforce network controller driver) I installed corrupted something even after I had uninstalled them and installed the correct one (also a nforce network driver - but more specific to the mobo).

Anyway, I formatted the machine, installed the correct drivers again and all is working.

Okay. Maybe I'm loosing my mind.

The newly formatted PC was fine with the internet and then suddenly - nothing. It started doing the exact same thing again out of the blue.

I can connect to the router fine (reports that the internet is connected). There doesn't seem to be any thing wrong with the drivers (they from the manufacturers website) and over and above it all, IT WAS WORKING!

The only thing I can think of... and this may sound crazy....is that Windows XP Service Pack 3 is doing something dodgy? Is that possible?

Yes. common trait of XP SP3 ! reinstall xp without sp3 then u'll see the internet will work fine

TRY THIS AGAIN...

Doubt he tried it in the first place...

You need to first find out what your DNS settings are. Failing that, try 10.0.0.2 for primary, and leave secondary blank.

To edit DNS settings:

My Computer -> Right click Network Places -> Properties -> Right click your network connection -> Properties -> Highlight TCP/IP -> Properties -> Select "Use the following DNS server addresses:".

Oh, and there's an easy way to test if this really is the problem. Try to visit http://216.239.59.103 or try to ping 216.239.59.103

If either of these works, then you have connectivity, but you are having issues resolving the domain to an IP, and hence your DNS settings need fixing. If they don't work, then you have some other connectivity issue that should be troubleshooted accordingly.

Are there other drives connected that could contain virus's? maybe reload the pc with no other drives connected.

If it's an older nForce board, it could be that Nvidia Active Armor firewall messing things up. I read a lot of complaints about the thing back in the day.
