Hi All,

To start with, here is my computer specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33Ghz
2Gig RAM
Gigabyte G31MX-S2 Motherboard
MSI Geforce 8600GT 256MB
120GB Hard Drive X 2
300GB Hard Drive
Windows XP 32-bit

I'm currently running Pinnacle Studio 14 Ulitmate Collection and its extremely slow (with the current project), I have noticed that the Page File Usage in Task Manager sits at about 1.3GB... Is this normal? I was thinking of getting another 2Gig of RAM but not sure if this will help? Any suggetions?

Oh the current page file size is set at 3Gig.

Changing to a 64bit os and upgrading ur ram by another 2-4 gigs, depending on wat u can afford, will help a lot both in realtime and rendering

Upgrading your RAM will do nothing to improve performance unless your machine is running out of RAM. Unfortunately Pagefile usage is not a good way to determine if your machine is running out of RAM....

Rather go to your task manager and look under the performance tab, Commit Charge (K). Commit charge is your total memory allocation, i.e. both physical RAM and virtual (page file).

Total is the amount of total memory currently used (page file and RAM).
Limit is the amount of total memory that can be allocated (again Page and RAM)
Peak is the most amount of memory (page file and RAM) used since your machine was started.

If the Peak commit charge is less than your Physical RAM, then upgrading will not improve performance, since your machine has enough RAM to meet the peak demand. It is possible for the page file to grow, even without your machine running out of RAM....

Thanks for all the replies!

My current peak is 1291292K, so guess adding RAM won't help then... Upgrading to Windows 7 64bit, would that maybe help? What else could it be that is slowing down perfomance? I'm 100% sure there are no registry problems and also no viruses... any kind of test I can run to see where this PC sucks at and then upgrade the compenent that is holding it back? Budget is kinda tight so can't really upgrade much...

The video that is being edited is SD video, but there are quite a few transitions and effects used.. If I drop one fade in transition in the project, it takes about 30sec before the program is ready to work again.

Thanks again

You could alternatively get 8 gigs of RAM or so and disable your page file completely.

More RAM unfortunately will help you nothing. What applications do you have installed, perhaps do a screenshot of all installed apps? Have you scanned for spyware? My guess is that you installed something which is either running your CPU high, or your ps14 software has a scratch file (or something similar) running on a slow disk....

Thanks, I will scan for spyware. I normally run ComboFix and have Avast Home edition installed, but will get another program for spyware, any recommendations? Also will get a list of all programs installed.

My current hard drive setup is as follows:
C: 120gig HDD (Page File, and Rendered Videos)
D: 120gig HDD (Windows, and all programs)
F: 300gig HDD (Videos)

All hard drives are SATA2, think 2 of them are Seagate and the other a Maxtor. I'm not sure of cache sizes, but think the 300gig has 16mb Cache and the others 8mb. I can't check at the moment as I'm not at home, but will check tomorrow.

@Kuga - I've disabled my page file completely just to check if it'll use the RAM instead but I don't understand because task manager still shows usage of the page file

Changing to a 64bit os and upgrading ur ram by another 2-4 gigs, depending on wat u can afford, will help a lot both in realtime and rendering

Assuming the program he's using will use more than 3gb of ram. He'd need a 64bit build of the application to fully use lots of ram.
