Hello all

so my car is having a paint issue where the clear is coming off

I took it to a panel shop and they said the car was worked on before and the clear is not factory painted

So i bought the car about 5 years ago and was never told the car was worked on

So i called the dealer and he said its been 5 years, so cant do anything

What can i do ?

or am i wasting my time

sell to me at a huge discount because of crappy paintwork. then buy brand new! win win!

Not a whole lot you can do. Plenty of brand new cars on the showroom floor have been worked on.

Reality is if a car lives outside this is going to happen after a few years, even from new.

Peeling paint is extreme but the clear coat is usually long gone.

I would say rain and just being outside and unwashed does as much damage as the sun.

Have you seen rust form on stuff that's never seen the sun? Same logic.

Post a pic if you can. There is quite a bit of info online on restoring crappy paint jobs with wet sanding. Essentially 1500 or 2000 grit water paper and a few hours of elbow grease may yield a marked improvement.

This also happens when wash your car with dishwashing liquid or throw a little paraffin in your car wash water.

Dissolves tar quite easily. Had to use it once to get tar off from bodywork around wheel arches.
However I did not dissolve it into the wash water....
