Anyone suffer from this? and what are your symptoms and what meds do you take.

i get very close. Just the inability to focus and rationalize and think logically. Heart goes crazy. My one friend has it bad tho. Dont know what he takes

Boy did I used to suffer badly from these. They used to completely incapacitate me. Symptoms are usually an overwhelming fear of dread and panic that comes upon you for no reason. Sounds silly but basically what normally triggers panic is something real. Imagine the panic someone who realises he is drowning feels. Its extreme but it has a logical cause so it makes sense. Now imagine someone is going about their business and is suddenly engulfed by the same extreme panic. WTF is going on!??? Am I dying??? Because their is no logical explanation for this panic you panic more....and then some more.

It is a vicious circle but each episode eventually passes. But then you think that because it happened say in a cinema you better avoid cinemas. Then you get one in a shopping mall so avoid malls. Pretty soon you dont actually leave your bed if you can help it. You are so panicky about having a panic attack you go nowhere and do nothing. Again, fear and panic leads to more of the same.

Now Im not a Doctor or Shrink but what I do think is that most of them dont actually understand or know how to treat. You need a specialist in this field. Most will just give you some quick working tranquilizers. What you need is a combo of meds and therapy.

But the secret is as simple as it effective. You need to realise that a panic attack cant hurt you. Really. Again it sounds simple but its not because the sensations are so severe and real. But you have to become its master and take the wind out of its sails.Once you truly know this then you are well on your way to recovery.

I havent had one for many many years now but I remember the 3 or 4 years of absolute hell very well.

Good luck to you or whoever it is you are asking for. PM me for moral support if you want. I will understand exactly what you are talking about.

My mom used to get this a while back. They had one hell of an dip, and she started taking anti-depressants. I think that gave her the panic attacks, because she just stopped taking it one day, and never got any attacks again. But I can be wrong. I dont get such attacks, but I'm a very stressed, and that sucks. I cant even talk in front of a few people. And on a phone it's hell. Dunno why. But Good luck for who ever get those attacks.

Yeah that's the worst part about it.

You need to get to the root of the problem. Try and think of the circumstances that brought about the first attack and the following ones. Go see a psychologist. Try avoid being put on heavy duty drugs like SSRIs until you've exhausted every other avenue. I'm not a doc but I've been through it.

EDIT: Also get exercise. That really helps. Well for me anyway

Thing is Alan, I dont think anything brings about the first attack. Its completely random but you associate the location, situation or event with the first attack.

Exercise def helps. Go balls to the wall in running, cycling, swimming etc.

From your description I can say it happened to me about twice in the last two years. Not that bad but it was frustrating. Little sleep and work stress could have been a contributing factor.

Problem is it always makes me wonder when you end up in a grave situation; will you panic or is that not related at all. The fact that the legs go all numb and you seemed to freeze is scary. If that happens in a situation when you are under threat??

Good luck.

I had some bad ones ended up in emergency room with resting heart rate of 180 plus.
Ended up there more than a couple of times probably from PTSS. Have to carry Beta Blockers around but have not had an attack for some time now.

Not related. When you end up in a grave situation your panic is logical and a result of the situation. Perfect sense. Its when you panic for no apparent reason. Its crazy.

Very reasuring! Thanks a lot. I do hope I've seen the end of those panic attacks experienced although not as serious as what I read here but it was damnn scary at the time.

That may be the case in a panic disorder. But panic attacks can also be triggered by obscure things. It can be phobia, situation. stress, medication related and so. That why IMO he should go see a psychologist

Ive only ever had them twice and both from my current gf :p
when my emotions are heavily involved and a female knows how to play with my brain and feelings it often leads to me having a panic attack, especially when she plays her little mind games that she plays so well..

I reckon a psychiatrist first, they can get a better 'read' on the mental situation ...... psychologists are more problem fixers without medication.

It is quite strange that all the Grandmasters and Supergrandmasters seem to have this problem. Look back and you will see. Is there perhaps a link?

I have learned to control my panic attacks with breathing as in deep in, hold and slowly out. Then it slowly goes away.

My other symptoms are tachi heart for no reason. Can be midnight while sleeping. Jumps to 160 bpm.

Skipped heartbeats like flutters in the chest.

Freshy has got this to a tee. His post is exactly as it is.
