Just listened to the recording. Papi basically said screw the customer; the shareholder is the most important and we'll do as we please.

They are going to profit big time off of Vodacom, I'm sure.

Well, at least he was admitting that they have a problem.

This may make a few people very angry but it is noteworthy that the penetration of broadband is exceptionally low in SA at about 2% where the other countries have about 25 % this is maybe why prices are high. Does this justify the exorbitant costs of ADSL? Would a dramatic drop in prices cause a large uptake of the product? I believe that a drop would encourage people to subscribe to ADSL. We can only stay positive and hope for the best…

It sounds like he's justifying the pricing by quoting the low number of subscriptions. And anyway, as with all the other large and influential telecom companies, they are just using SA as either a stepping stone (which has its advantages, I agree) or as a starting point.

Once the majority of the uninformed public appear to be happy, they move on to the other African countries, where communities are only to happy to take what they can get. This is what Telkom would like to do, if you ask me.

South Africans aren't happy with just basic voice services anymore. We want to be able to compete against countries in the northern hemisphere. That means a lot of investing on Telkoms behalf, which they don't want to. The shareholders are much too important.

I doubt Telkom has the capacity to handle the traffic if dial-up modem calls to ISP were to be free (even when only during CallMore time - no heavy business usage)

I'm convinced that the ADSL rates have to be as high as they are to keep the demand low to hide Telkom's inability to really handle the data demand the country requires.

PS: Papi, I wish I could persuade your daft people about a telephone line we canceled in MAY 2005 and you keep insisting charging me for. I want my money back!

Thats a hippee Hoohaaa, a nice way of saying you are talking cr@p sir!!

about the colloqium's
One has to be careful what you say about your shareholding
refering to Roy's hot air.

Then the oke talks about what the DOC says and implies its not wise for either party to bad mouth Telkom, then later goes on to make remarks about the 'returns that shareholders are accustomed to'.

We all know where the government's bread is buttered.
