Parental web filters rarely block social networking

well, there is always a way around blockage.
 
It is very difficult to protect your children online there are dangers lurking everywhere. Most parents don't have the technical ability/know how to effectively protect their children.

I found it easier to just make the router block their computers from accessing the internet.

Exactly, such type of blocking hardly ever works, especially today when kids know much just about everything by the time they are 10.

With the power of google you can fix anything, just type, "uninstall/remove protection program name here" in google, boom.

If someone disables router access, just go to the library or your friends house, google how to solve that.

There is no problem you can't solve with Google. It's better just to talk to the kids, believe me, these programs make kids want to try even harder to get on the net.

Categories, specific sites, keywords, schedule based blocking, IM filtering, logging, etc. etc.
Easy to install and configure. Options for parental admin to allow sites that may be blocked under a category but that you want to allow your kids to visit, etc.

I have added youtube to the blocked sites list for my kids. Unfortunately youtube is more full of cr@p than decent stuff these days. My kids know and are happy to live without it. It's that or no internet at all.

Filtering doesn't fix kids behaviour problems anymore than good policing solves crime. The latter mustn't stop us employing law enforcement in society. Filtering does help to deter, and it prevents unwanted cr@p on your home computers.

It does a good job of keeping good kids away from unwanted search results and sites. It also blocks known scam sites, often attached to dodgy software download sites. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Preventing 80% of trouble with an auto filter is a part of good parenting, IN ADDITION to bringing up your kids well cos you can't block it all.

I have to ask, if it's illegal to w@nk in public and expose yourself to minors, why do we take it easy on public porn peddlers? Why is it OK to let a desperate 50 year old man expose himself to your daughter, even if it's unintentional? Let's face it, innocent google searches go badly wrong... The internet needs to be cleaned up and sorry for the naysayers, it needs some form of legislation. I say introduce the .xxx or .nsfk (not safe for kids) domain where all things porn and unsuitable for kids can go... then just allow users to block that domain altogether if they prefer. I'm sure people will differ on definitions, but it's alot better do disagree and err on the side of caution. Kids will discover the adult world in good time, we don't need to get them there sooner than that.

there's always the "safe" internet from isps like xdsl, but takes just one vpn connection for example, something like ghost os or mirc dcc...
