Passport Application in Cape Town

Hi

I need to apply for a passport ASAP, as I will be leaving for Italy at the end of September for research/experimentation.

I would like your recent experiences and suggestions of which home affairs branch would be best to do the application, preferably on a Saturday as I work full-time as well as when to arrive (morning when the doors open/ mid-day/ before closure)

I stay in Durbanville, so making the trip to Paarl/Stellenbosch/Cape Town isn't a problem.

I queued last Monday, at 4.45pm they gave me a slip of paper and told me to leave just before I had to have fingerprints done.
Tuesday morning I went with my slip, and the masses wanted to fight with me as they had been queueing since early morning, so I left. Went back later and they were offline. Wednesday they refused to accept the priority slip they had given me and I queued again. Photos had to be retaken and finally it was done. This was Bellville Home Affairs, but what I did learn from one of the guys working there is that if you have transport Malmesbury is your best bet.
 
Come to Paarl. I sitting here now and you will be here max 2 hours...

Somerset West Home Affairs is rather quiet. Feedback is it will take no more than an hour or two and ready within two weeks. Same feedback with Wynberg.
 
Just remember that the time of month may also play a factor. I've found that from 10th to 23rd of the month, people flock to DHA for whatever reason. 15th is a no go

Dunno how true this is, but have heard that some of the small dorpies only do passports certain days of the week. So, if you decide to try one of them, best to phone first.

I Tried Malmesbury a month or so back with no success. Crazy queues and offline systems; 4.5 hours I'll never get back. A colleague experienced the same issue at Paarl.

Decided to give Bellville a try during my lunch hour rather than take another full day off... turned into an extended lunch hour, but got it sorted in under 2 hours.

Suppose it is luck of the draw. If you are in and out under an hour, go play lotto!

I went to Stellenbosch DHA yesterday. Arrived at 09H30, and was out by 12H10.
Number were low between 09H30 and 10H00, but started picking up significantly around 12H00.

Same experience about a year ago at Bellville Home Affairs. Application took 30 minutes, collection 2 weeks later took 1 hour.

That still seems ridiculous though. Why did it take so long? 2 hours and 40 minutes is still completely unacceptable.

I also noticed that at 8 it is busy with a lot of people in the line but between 09:30 and 11:00 seems like the sweet spot.
 
I was at DHA in Cape Town over a week for 4.5 hours waiting for their system to come online.
There has been endless issues with their system nationally since then.

According to their Facebook page, it is OK now.
 
Was at DHA on Monday for a passport application, biggest issue for me was sitting in the queue for an hour, once inside the total process took 35mins from paying to photos to finger prints and data capture etc.

This was at the Mitchell's Plain DHA office. Not to bad.
 
I need to apply for a replacement passport soon as well. Can you guys who've been lately confirm whether or not it's necessary to bring your own passport photos? I know they take your photo there as well, but just want to check if they don't also require you to bring your own.

Nope no need for photos unless you are under 6 years old (at Paarl)

Edit: also no need to fill in any forms either before or at the Home Affairs office
 
I went to Stellenbosch DHA on Monday (20Jul, day before the OP). Arrived at 11:35 and was #11 in the queue. Got helped at 12:45 and was out by 12:50. Total time 1h 15mins.

I did need to bring 2 photos for passport application. Cost was R400.

They said it would take about 4 weeks, but (quote) "there is a long queue in Paarl, Cape Town and Bellville where you can stand and then get it in 2 weeks"....
 
How do you guys not have up to date passports? :confused:

They only expire like every 10 years...
