Pastel express over the net

Hi Guys,

I run Pastel express on server in our office, can i get a home user to be able to work remotely?

I have Mapped a network drive here for the local PC's but would need to know how to do this over the net?

Alternatively I suppose i can use remote desktop, which should be ok?

I have an ADSL line on each side, with a linksys router on the one side and a edimax router on the other?

Remote desktop will give best results in this case I think.

You can also try something like Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc/) to create a vpn and map a network drive over that. Not sure how the performance on that will be, but it is another option.

As long as the version loaded at home is the same as the office it will work, but licenses need to be loaded, and it will be slow. the bigger the database the slower it will be.

Your best bet is with remote desktop and go the VPN route

I think I may go with the remote desktop option, problem we get here is that if your connection drops, it often bombs out my pastel - I am using 2004 specifically as it lets your 3 users move around, rather than specifying 3 pc's. as long as there are only 3 at any time.

bear in mind, this is going to be SLOW. Best get a 4MB unshapped DSL account for this purpose. hamachi will work and is easy to setup

If you go with the remote desktop option you will have to open up ports on your router that forward directly to your pc.

If you are looking for something that "just works" without any router config you can try www.gotomypc.com. I've heard only good things about them.

You can try it for free - but after that you pay a monthly fee to use this.

If you're looking for a free/opensource product and know how to set up forwarding on routers, you can also check out WinVNC (google for it). WinVNC has the added advantage that it will adapt to your connection speed and will lower the qaulity of the image so that it still responds very quickly (who needs to view pastel in 16 million colours, right?)

I sincerly hope you are talking about VPN ports...

(in the event he can't get the router to router VPN to work and has to use his server).

Which will no longer be a problem as the app remains running.

Anyway, I tried it before - no way it'll run the mapped drive route on the speeds we got in this place. Some kind of remote desktop software is the only way to go. (over vpn of course).
