I don't know if anyone will be able to assist me or not but Pastel Partner has been giving endless problems. I have contacted Pastel support a number of times and it comes down to the point where they say it is our network.

The issue is that we have a number of Pastel users on a network and at random times a number of our users will try run Pastel and noting will happen. If they try and run Pastel again they receive the error that Pastel is already running. If the user waits for a few minutes they will get the "error code 20". The strange thing is not all of our users will get the error. When the users get the error they are still able to browse to their Pastel map drives with no problems at all. The Users normally need to restart multiple times before being able to open Pastel again. I have checked that the PCs have no network problems such as packet loss or latency and have found no issues at all.

The issue will come at random and will effect different Users. Sometimes we can go weeks without the issue at all.

Thanking you in advance.

First of all make sure all the users are on the same version of Pervasive.

Second, make sure they use the correct icon when they open partner. I find that sometimes they will use the icon automatically added to the desktop when Pastel was installed instead of the icon that points to the server. In fact, delete all the icons from the desktop as well as the start menu and recreate the correct icon that points to the PartnerV12.exe (or PartnerV11.exe) file on the mapped drive on the server.

Error code 20 usually refers to Pervasive not being open or present and I usually find that if you get this error, then either Pervasive did not start when Windows started or they are using the wrong icon where Pervasive Client/Server is used.

If this does not work then it would be best to call someone to come and have a look at your setup there. I can help with this should you require help.

Thank you for your reply.

I have ensured users are using the correct Icons and that the correct version of Pastel and Pervasive are installed as this is what I thought and found Originally.

We have had someone out to look before and they gave up as they spent a full day looking for possible causes but came short.

This is why I am posting this thread as I have been confused why this would happen if things run perfectly and out of no where the issue will appear.

How many users & what server are you running this on ?

We have a 20 user license but never have more than 15 users logged on. We are running Windows Server 2008

Have you added an exception into your virus protection on the client PC's to stop it from scanning the mapped drive when you open pastel ?

Do you have 15 CALs for the Windows 2008 Server.

Check the event logs on the server for errors.

We have the exact same setup at two other sites and they do not receive this error at all. I will give this a try and see what happens.

We have more than 15 and cannot find anything on the logs relating to anything that could cause Pastel to give us the errors.

Check your printer setup, connect all your printers directly using ip address and bypass the server mapping.
Clear out any printers that are no longer on the network
Add c:\pastel11\ and network drive mapping to anti virus exception on pc/laptop and server.
Make sure everyone is on the latest pervasive.

do you have bridged network cards?
we had to destroy our bridge and now only use a single nic which sped up pastel.
We have 30 user server license and Server 2003 and don't have any issues anymore.

Also check your pervasive settings - utilites - control centre - there a couple settings in there eg tcp/ip etc.

I assume you running pervasive client on users pc's and not workgroup.

We currently have no bridged connections. I am giving a try to the antivirus to not scanning the Pastel folder and Mapped drive.

Yes we are running pervasive Client

make sure that the usernames on the PCs are unique. IE not just user.
user1, user2, john, susan, invoice pc, capture pc etc are all more unique
