Situation:

1 Server:
Windows 2003 Standard edition R2 64bit
Xeon E5440 @ 2.8ghz
4gb Ram
gigabit network, cat6
Pastel runs very slow when connected to the network, server also serves as a database server alongside pastel.
Takes 5 to 10min from a laptop connected to the network to load up Pastel, disconnect network - and Pastel loads up in less than 1min?

Pastel 2009, 2007
Pervasive SQL 9.7 Server - 30 licenses

30 clients running 9.7 workgroup - laptops

I want to upgrade the 9.7 server to 10 server
Upgrade all clients to psql 10 as well.

with the clients it's fine, but I have never installed PSQL pervasive server before?

What would the steps be to take?
Get everyone out of pastel
uninstall pervasive server 9.7 from main server
install pervasive server 10 onto main server
restart
is there any configuring I need to do?

On the pervasive cd under the setup folder there is a PSA folder. Run the setup in that folder to install Pervasive System Analyzer.
Use that to uninstall the Pervasive engine and delete all the components. Its much more thorough.
Have not used the Server version of pervasive yet but it should be straight forward. Just call Pastel Support on 011 304 3000 and ask them for some optimization settings for the server like increasing the buffer sizes etc.

Before I forget. How is your clients licensed?
Are they each licensed on their own or do the pull their license info from the server?
And do they automatically open a company file from the server or not?

This sometimes happen if there is a DNS issue or if there is a Printer configured under "File- Printer and fonts setup" that is not actually on the network.

Say you have a HP1000 on a PC called Admin according to Pastel for that company. Pastel then tries to locate this printer on that PC to render all the reports. You will also notice that the pc tries to resolve Admin as admin.com and admin.co.za etc. if you monitor the network traffic, and when it times out it will just open the report.
If you ain't connected to the network WINDOWS sees this and does not try to resolve the Admin pc name and thus immediately tells Pastel that the pc is unreachable.

So just go into that pastel file and set the printer to one that is available and copy it to all tabs and all users and it should be snappy again.

Pastel running on a network is incredibly slow - 5-10min just to open Partner 2009, disconnect from the network (site licenses on the laptop) and it opens in less than 1min.
Been on the phone with Pastel and we still sit with slow speeds 2 years later...

Playing around with terminal services and Pastel
Login to server via terminal services and loading up pastel takes 2min and runs fast....maybe this is the correct route to follow?

We have a backup server running 2003 only 1 terminal server license available, comes with 5 terminal server licenses but they are bing used at another branch for vpn access etc.

We do have Windows 2000 advanced server license with 20 terminal server licenses available?
Maybe I should go this route

Some have site licenses and others get the license from the server, all pastel data on the server - all of them are slow to connect to a network dataset.
Those that have site licenses sometimes copy the dataset to their c drive and disconnect from network and open pastel and it runs fast.

Printer is attached to a switch connected to one of the 5 network cards on the main server - 1 network card goes to each switch (5 gigabit switches) network cards are bridged to create a single IP address etc

Is the printer locally installed with a tcp/ip port on each pc or is the printer shared from the server?

If the printer connects via tcp/ip, does it connect to a friendly name for the printer or directly to the IP address?

Try to install the generic text only printer driver on one PC and set that as the default printer in windows and in the pastel file and try open pastel then and see what the speed difference is for me?

I had this issue before....

Printer is shared from the server.
Connects via tcp/ip to a friendly name for all users connected to the server.

I will try the generic text only solution and see what happens.

Hi all, just to add my 2 cents to this issue

i was experiencing a slow connection similar to that of this problem. what i discovered was that i had malwarebytes installed and it was filtering traffic with one of it's features. closed malwarebyes and everything was ok again.

hope it helps someone. some day.
