Hi all

I am at my wit's end and hope there is a genius out there who can help me!

You may have noticed that in the patch notes that there was a bit about adding the line 'SET gxApi "d3d9ex"' to your config.wtf file. This apparently improves textures for XP users and may solve some issues of the game crashing. Being an XP user and suffering from crashes, I decided to give it a try.

After clicking the launcher's play button, an error message came up referring to DirectX. Unfortunately, I did not take further note of it. The game did not open. I then tried to open it again and it opened fine. However, the picture was snowy and the colours were sort of bleached. Nevertheless, I played for a bit assuming that I could reverse the setting change and everything would go back to normal.

The really worrying thing is that it's not just WoW that has the snowy picture and strange colouration - it's everything!

I have tried the following to fix this (none of which has made a difference):
  • Removed the line from config.wtf
  • Replaced line with SET gxApi "d3d9" (apparently this is the default)
  • Replaced line with SET gxApi "opengl" (something I got from the WoW forums)
  • Updated graphics card driver
  • Reinstalled DirectX (that itself caused other problems, which I seem to have sorted out now)
  • Updated monitor driver
  • Checked all cables are plugged in correctly
  • Booted up in safe mode
  • Tried monitor on a different PC - it worked fine
  • Checked image when BIOS is open - it is fine. Snow only starts when Windows logo appears.
  • Changed every imaginable setting for my graphics card
  • Changed every imaginable graphics setting in WoW
  • Reduced hardware acceleration to zero

My video card:
Nvidia 7950 GT

My monitor:
Samsung Syncmaster 740N

Not the snowy Christmas I was wanting.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much!

1.Download latest graphics driver
2.Uninstall graphics driver
3.Restart PC
4.Install latest graphics driver
5. Restart PC, should work. If not then i have no idea

What onizuka said. Do you have another pc you can test your card in? That might be biting it. :(

Had a similar issue...but with 'black' snow. I have a 9800 series NVidia card. I Had to drop the refresh rate of the monitor to 60MHz...and the snow was gone. Seems the 'default' of 72 Mhz and D3D9 with my card / monitor combo were not friends.

Thanks all for your suggestions!

I gave them a try but unfortunately they did not work.

But I realised that my graphics card as outputs for two monitors. So I switched to the second output and everything is working ver nicely now. :D

Do you guys think that the there must be some sort of physical problem with the first output given that uninstalling and reinstalling the driver did not work? Is it possible that the edit to config.wtf could have caused this?

I love the new graphics. And best of all. My PC lag is gone which I find very strange, the GFX go up and my PC lag goes down. But hey I'm not complaining :D

So Question:

Is it better to just normally run Wow or add 'SET gxApi "d3d9ex"' to your config.wtf file?

I didn't change nothing and WoW has never run this smoothly. I don't have an Epic GFX card either I have the 9600GT (512). I don;t want to add the file as I might just mess it up again :o

(If it aint broken don't try and fix it)

What I have found is that as soon as I lose allot of health the screen goes red to warn you that red tinge stays on the outsides of my screen permanantly even after I have ressed and come back into the dungeon. I have to log out and log back in to get rid of it. Have a Geforce 8800GT Extreme graphics card

I think they may have improved some of the stuff, you know blizzard, they can run the game on a frigging iphone if they were so inclined...

I did notice the rendering being done differently, like my Helm would "be put on" last... I almost thought I was hacked but then just noticed my ears does look like that and I had all my armor still :(
