Has anyone recieved a patch antenna yet ? Is it worthwhile getting one, it seems to be relatively inexpensive if you consider Rodent spent R220 on a pigtail to use on a Cantenna. What kind of gains can you expect on these little things ?

The patch antenna didn't have a higer gain than the modem's built-in antenna as far as I could tell. I mounted mine on the roof, and it worked, but it's not weatherproof. I eventually took it apart and used the pigtail on a coffee can waveguide. The gain on the waveguide was almost double that of the patch antenna.

Hmmm, interesting. How good is the connection on the connector of the patch antenna, R250 still isn't bad for a 1.5m pig tail. What kind of signal strength do you get with just the antenna on the modem ?

I found the same as groenie.
I have a patch antenna here also and although it claims 10 dBi, if I find a spot with say 25% on my modem, then put the patch antenna there and my modem elsewhere I still only get 25% so it would seem the 10 dBi is all lost in the 2.5m cable.
So basically a patch antenna is only good if you want your modem placed in a convienent spot.

The connector isn't brilliant. It's very loose and falls out easily. I don't know how it compares to the modified MCX connectors. Keep in mind that it is not a proper pigtail as it doesn't have an N-type connector on the other end. The N-type connector alone is about R100. I didn't use a N-type connector though: I just stuck the open end of the cable through the coffee tin, making sure the shielding made good contact with the metal. The inner wire was the correct length (30mm), and I have that standing upright inside the coffee tin.

I think Poynting now has the proper connectors as they said we'd get them with the antennas we ordered from them.

Hello,

Got my patch from FastComm 2day - and like any techie, took it apart :-)

Guess what - I found a sticker inside it : PATCH-A0014-01 - www.poynting.co.za

So I guess Poynting might be the correct people to contact for the patch - price/service/competency wise.

Just my 2cents worth.
