Patent questions

You need buckets of money to register a patent AFAIK. Contact Spoor & Fisher, they are patent attorneys for advice

Thanks ITCynic. Good to know about the money factor.

easily > R100k. Check up Adams & Adams or Spoor & Fisher. You could try do it yourself, but odds are very good that it will be rejected. There's a reason why these guys exist. P.S. Patent attorneys are engineers with law degrees. 8 years min of studying.

So I guess it's only really worthwhile pursuing if you're going to make money directly from the patent - i.e. produce the widgets and not just flog the idea?

AFAIK cost is about R5000 for SA only, and under R200 ANNUAL.Last for 20 years but can be extended. For SA only it is fairly easy to do on your own.

If you wanna go worldwide it needs to be registered in every country you see as a worthwhile market. This could add up to 100k plus as you need to do it through patent attorneys.I did a process patent years ago in the US only and it cost me around 1200USD.

You do not need a prototype, only the plans.Be sure to check if your idea is not patented already, there are online databases, can't remember names now.

In South Africa it used to be done through CIPRO so my guess it is through CIPC now.

EDIT:Yes its via cipc now. LINK
Online patent search SA:link
Also international agreements helps protect your patent in other countries.SA is a part of it.Read here.
